How to search for 78rpm recordings

Subject: How to search for 78rpm recordings
From: Gabriel

My uncle (Matt Scally of Ballycastle, Co Antrim, Ireland) made some recordings of Irish songs many years ago. One of them, 'The Old Lammas Fair', was in a BBC LP vinyl record of songs of the British Isles and is easily found. He apparently made other recordings, including 'Eileen Og' and 'Come back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff' that came out on 78rpm records. I've used Discogs to find vinyl but I can't find ways of searching for 78s. Does anyone have any advice?

Problem is, most discographies of Irish traditional music I am aware of, eg echoes of Erin project, are dealing with instrumental/dance music

Thanks for the advice Peter. Unfortunately, I couldn't turn up anything on either route. I hope to get some more suggestions. There must surely be someone who has an obsession with recordings of Irish songs on 78s.

It may be worth asking at ITMA, there's a lot of knowledge concentrated there and they are very helpful. They don't appear to have the recordings but they can point you towards other sources, discographies or other collections.

A BRITISH SAMPLER
A souvenir in sound of England Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland

This disc presents a musical tour of Britain, sampling some of the rich musical fare which the tourist may find as he travels around the four countries.

British music differs widely from one part of the land to another; it is as varied as the country's scenic beauties and as full of charm, interest and surprise. It expresses the different racial characters, the forms of society, the historical traditions, the ways of life of the peoples who make up the British race.

Recent years have seen a renascence in British music, which is now enjoyed throughout the World by people whose tastes range in the spectrum of musical appreciation from the Beatles to Benjamin Britten. This revival draws inspiration from the nation's rich store of folk song and traditional music. but it is based on no self-conscious resuscitation of a dying art, no artificial revival contrieved by anti-quarians and scholars. As the vigour and originality of compemporary popular music show, British music is a living reality.

All kinds of music are represented on this disc - from true folk song and traditional tunes centuries old to the latest creations from Merseyside and swinging London. many of the numbers have been specially recorded for a ''British Sampler'', others are from the BBC archives and from the BTA's sound library, and one or two have been created electronically by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

And here's a page where you can hear the tunes online:

http://www.onetunes.ru/rid-fefeech/

It seems to have been issued as an LP in 1969, unless you particularly want the 78.

The British Library Sound Archives has an online catalog, as does
the Library of Congress. A union catalog of Library and University
collections can be accessed at WORLDCAT.ORG.
And of course, the online sale and auction sites as well as
record collector lists such as 78-L, 78-c, and ARSC list.

Thomas.

Reading it again I think the op is asking particularly about how he might find

... 'Eileen Og' and 'Come back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff' that came out on 78rpm records.

You're right. I'm an idiot. Sorry, Gabriel.

Have you tried dropping a line to these places in case Irish people might have brought their favourite tunes to America?

The other possibility is to put up a want ad on adverts.ie and see if anyone had it in a back room…

I'd say Gabriel's best chance is to post a want ad on adverts.ie - and also to post on this thread on the allied boards.ie site - and if that comes to nothing, on the parent forum of the thread, the Antiques and Collectibles forum on boards.ie.

If that comes to nothing, he might "Talk to Joe" - email or phone in a request to Joe Duffy at his Liveline show on RTE Radio 1.

A friend, Barry Taylor, has done a great deal of research on Irish 78s and was working in conjunction with an enthusiast in Dublin
Barry is swilling German beer in Bavaria at present (Chacun a son gout ), but if you have no luck, I'll be happy to ask his advice when he returns
He's back in a couple of weeks

I've just checked the BBC annotated catalogue and can find no reference to a Matt Scully or the song, which suggests that it might have been recorded by Radio Eireann and given to the Beeb who didn't include it in their own collection.
Try RTE

Also theIrish Traditional Music Archive, though a search on the site returned no results. Jim Carroll, there are some references to him by the more formal 'Matthew Scully'.
