05 Jun 17 - 01:52 PM (#3859073) Subject: Tune Req: Melody Devon plough chant From: GUEST,Deb I'm searching for any trace of the melody for the chant derived from plainsong, probably a Mass, that the ploughman and his boy would do in Devon to the oxen as they ploughed- the oxen reportedly expected this 'work' song, and would not work without it. The chant was for two voices, in harmony. |

Just a punt. But if we can reproduce Sapphic tunes, which were notated! you never know. Period I'm thinking of was mid-Napoleonic wars.... |

It was from a novel by Elizabeth Goudge called 'Gentian Hill' So, you may think this is an unreliable source- but she used to research her periods carefully, and I've not caught her out in any little period detail yet- rather like Rosemary Sutcliff. Her books are a little gushy, but with a steely bright thread of sense and feeling running through; and the prose passages on countryside are brilliant. Hanyway, I searched various databases but only came up with passing references to a liturgical-origen plaugh chant.... |

As you say, she did her homework. See this article about Dartmoor ploughing.
