14 Jun 17 - 04:00 PM (#3860881) Subject: Great sale of books on music From: Folkrelic I want to let you know that the University Press of Mississippi is running a great sale of books on music. I count more than 40 titles on blues, jazz, cajun and creole, country, gospel, hymns, etc. Books in every other category of UPM's current and deep back list are on sale is well. Sale prices appear to be half or less. http://www.upress.state.ms.us/features/website_super_sale/subject Truth in advertising: UPM published my biography Lonesome Melodies: The Lives and Music of the Stanley Brothers. The hardcover edition is on sale at half price. My friend Burt Feintuch's fine photo and oral history Talking New Orleans Music: Crescent City Musicians Talk about Their Lives, Their Music, and Their City is less than half price. I hope this information is useful to the list. Thank you. |

18 Jun 17 - 07:07 AM (#3861548) Subject: RE: Great sale of books on music From: Felipa The link is to the university press catalogue, Al. I clinked on folksong/folk music and the first title I see is "Blues Mandolin Man: The Life and Music of Yank Rachell". Interesting as we don't often associate mandolin with blues. Some other titles include "Ragged but Right: Black Traveling Shows, 'Coon Songs', and the Dark Pathway to Blues and Jazz", "Roosevelt's Blues: African-American Blues and Gospel Songs on FDR", "Transatlantic Roots Music: Folk, Blues, and National Identities", "The High-Kilted Muse Peter Buchan and His Secret Songs of Silence" (once suppressed collection of bawdy songs), "The Norumbega Harmony: Historic and Contemporary Hymn Tunes and Anthems from the New England Singing School Tradition" (many are the sort of books though that are begging for inclusion of a CD) Prices are very reasonable, but as I'm abroad I would have to pay $10 per book extra for postage. In the U.S., the price is $5 first book, $3 each additional book. |
