Herga's last hurrah 25th June (UK)

After more than 54 glorious years of a well-earned international reputation, a collective membership in the thousands, more than 500 guest performers and more than a million cumulative decibels, Herga will suspend operations in its current format and at the current venue at the end of June.
But we don't want Herga go with a whimper; it has played too important a part in so many lives and in the UK folk scene, for us to allow its disappearance to go unmarked! So we are inviting you to a very special day, to help us "sing Herga out" (we are not calling it a "wake"). The event will be structured as a massive singaround interspersed with 20-30 minute sets by visiting artists, and will be held at our usual venue but on a Sunday from 2pm to 8pm, to enable people to attend without any logistics problems or concerns. There will be free food, there will be beer etc at club prices, but above all there will be music and song – your music and your singing are what will make this day truly special. So,
Come to
HERGA's LAST HURRAH
Sunday 25th June 2017
from 2pm till 8pm
Greenwood Hall,
Rickmansworth Road,
Pinner HA5 3TJ
Important:
to ensure appropriate arrangements,
please R.S.V.P to hergafolker@folk4all.net

was it a venue problem, or burnt out organisers? will you be continuing in a different venue at some stage?

I've only been once but it was very good (and I'm busy on Sunday). What hope for the rest?

Sorry to hear that, especially as my main club, the Fo'c'sle in Southampton, also 54 years old, is closing at the end of June as well. That one is due to our long standing organiser stepping down and no suitable volunteer has turned up.

Sandra - it's largely because the Committee have been overtaken by age and ill-health, plus declining attendance. There are plans to keep a song session (but not concert nights with guests) going in a local pub.

I am so sorry Joy and I will not be able to attend this.Herga was such an important time in our lives- and helped lead to the "Lakeman Dynasty." It will always be in our hearts and memories.

So sad - we had hoped to make it to the club and now its gone. Unfortunately we are playing in Golders Hill on Sunday all afternoon and have to get back down over the river for the evening. Hope it all goes well.
