So far, so good. We all know which button to press to get a Pavlovian response from Jim. I confess that I have do so myself, I hope not in a cruel way but because of the curious need that I have to try to introduce humour into discussions that I think are becoming too serious, but repeating the same old joke (jibe?) becomes tedious. Waving the same old red rag to the bull of Jim Carroll to achieve a predictable response has become frustrating and many threads have been ruined by it. I suggest a self-imposed embargo of posts to this thread to be taken up after the broadcasts and then continue with reactions to the content. Now surely that would make for more interesting reading, wouldn't it? I confess that I write this more in hope than anticipation. |

Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Jim Carroll Can I make a point here Vic This programme is one of an occasional series from a producer, J J O'Shea, which has included (so far) one on Jean Jenkins, the Mucicologist who set up the Anthropological 'Horniman Museum' and produced the magnificent 'Music of Islam' and 'Mongolian Music' series. J.J's work will include forthcoming programmes on Hugh Tracy's African Music and one for the 10th anniversary of collector Tom Munnelly's death later this year. Unlike Britain, Irish radio and television is rich in programmes of traditional music in every shape or form - from serious discussions to pub session - you can twiddle the dial on any night of the week and find traditional music, song or story - from all parts of these Islands and beyond. On MacColl's anniversary 18 months ago Lyric FM (Ireland's Radio 3, sort of) broadcast two, hour-long programmes on his work and ideas - a mixture of songs, talk and theory - not just the popular bits. The situation here has been arrived at thanks to the work of a dedicated few who decided to build a foundation for traditional music which has succeeded in producing an interest in young people which has guaranteed it a future for at least another two generations - youngsters are playing music to the level of some of the best I have ever heard independent of the pop scene and driven by a love of it Our own collection of Clare Songs are being used as a basis for the work of two singers who are on contract to take traditional songs around schools All of which is really a lead up to an explanation of my response to the spoiler put up by 'Guest Guest', which has happened before. The achievements here haven't been arrived at with infighting, or corpse-kicking. or faffing round with what is or what is not folk song, or making discussions on 'what is folk song' no-go areas or accusations of "folk police" or "purist"..... and all the rest of the nonsense It has been achieved by taking the music/song seriously and building a foundation to enable it to survive and thrive - a dedication to an important traditional art rather than putting bums on seats. I respond as I do because I'm fed up with the snide in-fighting that has turned the British scene from the healthy one I was part of to the shadow it seems to have become today - sorry'bout that Vic, it still remains important to me. You can judge tonight's programme on its own merits, but it's only a tiny tip of what's happening here because of the healthy position that has been fought for by people like Nicholas Carolan, Brendan Breathnach, Tom Munnelly, Ian Lee, Cairan MacMathuna... and all those unsung heroes who set the pace rather than going with the flow Jim Carroll |

The programme is well constructed and the singing extracts from the collection are all gripping, remarkable performances of some rare material. I can only say, "Well Done & Congratulations" to Jim & Pat. There is much that is dreadful and much that is excellent in my view in both research and study and performance in both the British and Irish scenes. If Jim cannot remember 'snide in-fighting' amongst Irish folk musicologists then he has a shorter memory than I have. At the end of the programme, Jim and Pat speak with justified pride that Clare Libraries are digitising and making their collection widely accessible on the internet, Brilliant! But they are not the only people doing this. At national level, The Full English database developed over the last few years at https://www.vwml.org/search/search-full-english now has something of the same quantity and quality as those of ITMA and The School of Scottish Studies. There are also quite a number of schemes going on at a local county level. The database assembled by Gyilym Davies and Paul Burgess in Gloucestershire is very impressive. Here in Sussex Tina and I are on the management committee of the an ambitious project called Sussex Traditions and we have each put in hundreds of hours over the last three years in supporting Steve Roud in digitising, transcribing, annotating, researching, gathering and documenting etc. etc. material to include in a database that currently holds around 5,700+ items and is still growing quickly. I ask Jim not to reply to this post on Mudcat because of the tendency for this forum for disagreements to descend to slanging matches that I will not participate in. Rather could I kindly suggest that he has a good look at where we have got up to at http://sussextraditions.org/collection/ and then contact me by email to discuss it, perhaps share approaches etc. He has my address. I look forward to hearing from him..... and Jim & Pat, keep up the good work! |

I have been doing this with my cassette & minidisce recordings so am familiar with the technique. Just thought/hoped the magic might have moved on. I will set one of the machines to accomplish that task - hopefully before I set off to Glasgow on Sunday to pursue one of my other hobbies. Thanks for responding. All else failing that will get you a recording, but the D-to-A and A-to-D conversions won't do wonders for the quality. The ideal is one of the applications that are designed to capture audio and/or video from the internet; but that said I struggle when trying to use what I have, which is the Applian Suite. Latterly I've just been running an audio editor in record mode while the stream is playing. I don't know exactly what goes on inside the sound card or the operating system but I assume and hope that it's all digital. |
