Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Jim Carroll Sorry about the hype... and the unearthly times of the broadcast, (both of which are nuffin' to do with us) but I've been asked to pass this message on on: Jim Carroll Hi Pat and Jim, Just to let you know that Rambling Candyman will be broadcast this coming Saturday 29th at 10pm and repeated Sunday morning 30th at 8am - here`s the Press Release Rambling Candyman |
27 Jul 17 - 06:50 AM (#3868560) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Vic Smith Great news, Jim. Thanks for passing it on. We wont be able to listen at the broadcast time as we have a gig that evening, but the website you list to says:- Podcast available at: www.newstalk.com/documentaryonnewstalk after the broadcast. and that's where we will listen to it (and record it). |
27 Jul 17 - 07:12 AM (#3868564) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Jim Carroll Many thanks Vic - good luck with the gig Jim |

27 Jul 17 - 10:16 AM (#3868620) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: GUEST,Alistair Disappointing that even this article on the web is not devoid of the endless bollox up of spelling of Ewan MacColl... |
27 Jul 17 - 10:51 AM (#3868627) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: GUEST,Guest McColl or MacColl - what does it matter? It was only a stage name to seemingly add authenticity to his persona. |
27 Jul 17 - 02:24 PM (#3868672) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: GUEST,Alistair McColl or MacColl - what does it matter? From the Troll with no name who posts as a guest... |

27 Jul 17 - 03:03 PM (#3868686) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Jim Carroll "It was only a stage name to seemingly add authenticity to his persona." There's always one insecuro who gets his rock off by kicking someone too dead to kick back Jim Carroll |
27 Jul 17 - 07:28 PM (#3868725) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: GUEST,Guest Whoa Jim I admired the bloke and respect his contribution. Doesn't mean I have to agree with everything he did and was. By the way I am in no way insecure. |
27 Jul 17 - 07:36 PM (#3868728) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Jim Carroll "Doesn't mean I have to agree with everything he did and was." I don't know who you are and I don't really care - It just puzzles me why people behave like you do in order to draw attention to yourself (presumably) There really is no reason for your snide comments - they were totally cancelled for and they have no place here - if MacColl had behaved like people like you he might have deserved some of the shit thrown at him - he didn't and he doesn't "I am in no way insecure." Sure you're not - keep telling yourself that Jim Carroll |

28 Jul 17 - 12:55 PM (#3868854) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Vic Smith Surely, this thread was intended as a useful tip about the programme that would be of great interest to people who have an interest in the authentic traditional end of the spectrum of Irish music and several posts thank Jim for the information. So far, so good. We all know which button to press to get a Pavlovian response from Jim. I confess that I have do so myself, I hope not in a cruel way but because of the curious need that I have to try to introduce humour into discussions that I think are becoming too serious, but repeating the same old joke (jibe?) becomes tedious. Waving the same old red rag to the bull of Jim Carroll to achieve a predictable response has become frustrating and many threads have been ruined by it. I suggest a self-imposed embargo of posts to this thread to be taken up after the broadcasts and then continue with reactions to the content. Now surely that would make for more interesting reading, wouldn't it? I confess that I write this more in hope than anticipation. |
29 Jul 17 - 04:00 AM (#3868937) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Jim Carroll Can I make a point here Vic This programme is one of an occasional series from a producer, J J O'Shea, which has included (so far) one on Jean Jenkins, the Mucicologist who set up the Anthropological 'Horniman Museum' and produced the magnificent 'Music of Islam' and 'Mongolian Music' series. J.J's work will include forthcoming programmes on Hugh Tracy's African Music and one for the 10th anniversary of collector Tom Munnelly's death later this year. Unlike Britain, Irish radio and television is rich in programmes of traditional music in every shape or form - from serious discussions to pub session - you can twiddle the dial on any night of the week and find traditional music, song or story - from all parts of these Islands and beyond. On MacColl's anniversary 18 months ago Lyric FM (Ireland's Radio 3, sort of) broadcast two, hour-long programmes on his work and ideas - a mixture of songs, talk and theory - not just the popular bits. The situation here has been arrived at thanks to the work of a dedicated few who decided to build a foundation for traditional music which has succeeded in producing an interest in young people which has guaranteed it a future for at least another two generations - youngsters are playing music to the level of some of the best I have ever heard independent of the pop scene and driven by a love of it Our own collection of Clare Songs are being used as a basis for the work of two singers who are on contract to take traditional songs around schools All of which is really a lead up to an explanation of my response to the spoiler put up by 'Guest Guest', which has happened before. The achievements here haven't been arrived at with infighting, or corpse-kicking. or faffing round with what is or what is not folk song, or making discussions on 'what is folk song' no-go areas or accusations of "folk police" or "purist"..... and all the rest of the nonsense It has been achieved by taking the music/song seriously and building a foundation to enable it to survive and thrive - a dedication to an important traditional art rather than putting bums on seats. I respond as I do because I'm fed up with the snide in-fighting that has turned the British scene from the healthy one I was part of to the shadow it seems to have become today - sorry'bout that Vic, it still remains important to me. You can judge tonight's programme on its own merits, but it's only a tiny tip of what's happening here because of the healthy position that has been fought for by people like Nicholas Carolan, Brendan Breathnach, Tom Munnelly, Ian Lee, Cairan MacMathuna... and all those unsung heroes who set the pace rather than going with the flow Jim Carroll |
30 Jul 17 - 10:15 AM (#3869079) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Vic Smith On this programme's website at http://www.newstalk.com/Collecting-the-songs-and-stories-of-Irish-Travellers-living-in-England it says - "PODCAST: Podcast available at: www.newstalk.com/documentaryonnewstalk after the broadcast." but at 3pm on Sunday 30/07 cut/n/pasting the podcast URL gives a "Not Available" message. Is this because - * I have not given them time to put this up yet * I do not live in Ireland * Another reason Can anyone help? Jim? |

02 Aug 17 - 05:48 PM (#3869585) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Vic Smith I have now had a chance to listen to the programme. It is excellent.... fascinating. The programme is well constructed and the singing extracts from the collection are all gripping, remarkable performances of some rare material. I can only say, "Well Done & Congratulations" to Jim & Pat. However, I must take exception to the rather jaundiced element in Jim's post of 29 Jul 17 - 04:00 AM especially where he writes:- "I respond as I do because I'm fed up with the snide in-fighting that has turned the British scene from the healthy one I was part of to the shadow it seems to have become today - sorry'bout that Vic, it still remains important to me." There is much that is dreadful and much that is excellent in my view in both research and study and performance in both the British and Irish scenes. If Jim cannot remember 'snide in-fighting' amongst Irish folk musicologists then he has a shorter memory than I have. At the end of the programme, Jim and Pat speak with justified pride that Clare Libraries are digitising and making their collection widely accessible on the internet, Brilliant! But they are not the only people doing this. At national level, The Full English database developed over the last few years at https://www.vwml.org/search/search-full-english now has something of the same quantity and quality as those of ITMA and The School of Scottish Studies. There are also quite a number of schemes going on at a local county level. The database assembled by Gyilym Davies and Paul Burgess in Gloucestershire is very impressive. Here in Sussex Tina and I are on the management committee of the an ambitious project called Sussex Traditions and we have each put in hundreds of hours over the last three years in supporting Steve Roud in digitising, transcribing, annotating, researching, gathering and documenting etc. etc. material to include in a database that currently holds around 5,700+ items and is still growing quickly. I ask Jim not to reply to this post on Mudcat because of the tendency for this forum for disagreements to descend to slanging matches that I will not participate in. Rather could I kindly suggest that he has a good look at where we have got up to at http://sussextraditions.org/collection/ and then contact me by email to discuss it, perhaps share approaches etc. He has my address. I look forward to hearing from him..... and Jim & Pat, keep up the good work! |
02 Aug 17 - 08:33 PM (#3869612) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: GUEST,Malcolm Vic - just kidding but will you please stop putting up things I am interested in? I have enough problems managing my time as it is and of course I am retired! Managed to get on to the newstalk site but could find no way of downloading / recording for later - ie in the car when I have no other distractions. Any ideas? Jim and Pat - not been over your way for a couple of years but hopefully we will meet up again soon. Listened to some of the programme and will get round to the rest - see above. In the mean time keep well and keep up the excellent work. |
03 Aug 17 - 07:44 AM (#3869679) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Vic Smith Malcolm wrote:- Any Ideas? Well, I recorded it on my Zoom recorder on a lead from the headphone socket of my computer speakers then transferred it as a .wav file back on to my desktop. From there it could be burnt on to a CD or an iPlayer to play in a car. (Which Malcolm? I suspect it's Storey.) |
03 Aug 17 - 08:50 PM (#3869788) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Hi Vic Yes it am I. So it seems that I need to play the programme through while recording it via the headphone outlet to a suitable software package - in my case Audacity. I have been doing this with my cassette & minidisce recordings so am familiar with the technique. Just thought/hoped the magic might have moved on. I will set one of the machines to accomplish that task - hopefully before I set off to Glasgow on Sunday to pursue one of my other hobbies. Thanks for responding. Probably see you next time Peta and Ken do something significant at the King and Queen - keep well. |
04 Aug 17 - 08:44 PM (#3870020) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Managed to record this Friday and am looking forward to listening to it on Sunday on my way up to Glasgow. Thanks everyone for the info and especial thanks to Jim and Pat for their foresight in getting the material recorded. |
05 Aug 17 - 03:56 PM (#3870148) Subject: RE: Prog. Irish Traveller & Clare singers From: Richard Mellish > So it seems that I need to play the programme through while recording it via the headphone outlet to a suitable software package - in my case Audacity. All else failing that will get you a recording, but the D-to-A and A-to-D conversions won't do wonders for the quality. The ideal is one of the applications that are designed to capture audio and/or video from the internet; but that said I struggle when trying to use what I have, which is the Applian Suite. Latterly I've just been running an audio editor in record mode while the stream is playing. I don't know exactly what goes on inside the sound card or the operating system but I assume and hope that it's all digital. |
