2017 Obit: Joan Blackburn

So sorry to be the bearer of the sad tidings that Joan has passed away. Her daughter posted on Facebook yesterday

"My heart is at a loss. I'm really sad to say that mine and my brothers Mum, Joan Blackburn, slipped away peacefully yesterday at 4pm.
I know she was very much loved by so many people.
I will post details of service within the next few days
Much Love xxxx"

Joan was a stalwart of the folk scene in the North West of England for many years, running clubs and singarounds particularly in the Wigan area. I will always remember her gentle voice and happy smile as well the trademark long red hair!

RIP Joan

Sad news, Joan was a lovely lady. I was very lucky to meet her on my trips 'Up North'.

Post the same thing I posted somewhere else -

I only met her a few times some years back at Wigan folk singaround/sessions but she was always very encouraging, very welcoming and very friendly. And great hair! Very positive memories :) at a sad time.

I remember going to a very packed room somewhere in a pub in Wigan with a room full of singers and musicians and I think I asked someone why didn't people get started because there were loads of people there? And they looked at me as though I was mad and said 'because Joan's not here yet'.

If I remember right she used to have a section in the evening which was 'song of the week' that everyone could learn and play along with (it was a song about Pendle when I went, I think). Getting everyone involved was the thing I took from it and it's a lovely quality to have

Very sorry to hear the news and my condolences to family etc.

I can only echo the content of all the previous posts. A prime mover in 'our' music especially up here in the north-west. I'm saddened to learn this news. Condolences from myself and all at Bothy, Southport.
