It had a review today that suggested that only die-hard folkies would like it. My interest is mainly in American stuff and the UK folk groups I liked (Spinners, Corries, Dubliners, Clanceys,Campbells) are dismissed as popularists by the purists. Roger, the whole album can be found on YouTube if you want to 'try before you buy'. Personally, I think it's fantastic. |

That does not bode well for the existence / condition of the master tapes. And CDR's have a very short playable life - commercialy pressed CDs / DVDs are much more prefereable. |

From: punkfolkrocker Bulmer sold CDs on Amazon [and elsewhere].. most people have claimed they were cheap shoddy CDRs.. but mine definitely looked like a factory pressed silver disc. Sound quality did not seem too bad at first quick sample listen through small speakers. Proper listening with good quality headphones revealed obvious obtrusive unpleasant distortion on Lal's vocal peaks.. This indicated either transfer from a shite condition vinyl LP, or very amateurish digital conversion & mastering to CD...??? Whichever, I couldn't bring myself to endure it again, so dumped it in a storage box... |

From: GUEST,The Moth I pre-ordered the vinyl edition from the Domino website when the reissue was first announced, and was quite surprised when I received it about three weeks ago....way ahead of the scheduled release date... I too have only previously heard the album from a dodgy Dave Bulmer CD issue (which was definitely a CDR), but can safely say the quality on the new reissue is absolutely spot on... Won't go into detail about what else is included in the package cos I don't want to spoil anyone's fun...but I personally think it's a thoroughly worthwhile purchase. |

My mrs prefers the 'pop' end of the folk spectrum.. a big time Kate Rusby fan.. She was downstairs listening to Amazon Prime Music on the TV speakers, so I persuaded her to take a listen to the Bright Phoebus mp3s. [tracks in random order - different to the LP] After the first few minutes her reaction was a bored expression and "What's that.. !!?? her voice is horrible!!!" So she skipped tracks until she heard Rubber Band and the electric guitar songs.. "Oh, that's better" I googled the Guardian review and linked article for her to read on her phone, went upstairs, and left her to it... About an hour and a half later I was back downstairs to find her happily singing along to one of Lal's solo tracks.. "I've gone back to the start and played it all over again.. she's grown on me.. I like it..."... 😎 |

From: Thomas Stern a word of caution - there are TWO versions of the BRIGHT PHOEBUS reissue release from DOMINO RECORDS: a single CD reissue of the album a 2-cd "deluxe" package containing the reissue, plus a cd of demos, and 24pp booklet with song lyrics and notes by Pete Paphides discussing the Watersons, genesis of the album, recording sessions, song notes, and critical response. Don't know if the booklet is included with the single disc release. Notes make no mention of the arrangement by which Domino obtained the master tapes. This would be nice to know, and if any other LEADER/TRAILER material may be forthcoming from Domino. Best wishes, Thomas. |
