Brian Preston/Dewhurst passed away on Wednesday. A veteran of many good hands and a great solo artist. A true professional.
RIP bonny lad.

A wonderful artist and performer.

My condolences to all his family and friends.

Another one gone - not seen Brian for many a year. Possibly the last time I spoke to him was when he excitedly 'phoned to tell me he'd found a Martin guitar - must have been back in the early 80's.

Great memories from the time I lived in Preston. Saw Brian (Dewhurst) regularly. Great guy, great performer. RIP

Very sad -- Brian was a great folk song interpreter and his renditions combined a powerful voice with sensitivity to the ballads. He had that larger than life character which allowed people to feel welcomed in his presence. Coincidentally his partner in the Horden Raikes Ron Flanangan from Lomgridge died just a few days later -- another giant of a man whose personality drew people to him. Both Brian and Rom recorded on the late Peter Green Westwood Label in 1973 "King Cotton" was well received and I imagine is a scarce collectible vinyl. Two great stawarts of the 60's folk revival in Lancashire. RIP well remembered.

Sad to hear this. I only mentioned him in a song intro a few weeks ago.

FROM THE FAMILY:
Dear all,
Thank you all for all the lovely comments, photos and videos which you have posted this last week. They have been lovely to read and very comforting to see how loved and respected he was.
Dads funeral arrangements are as follows:
Monday 6th November 2.30pm at Preston Crematorium.
There will then be food available at The Gables Pub in Leyland (2 Hough Lane, Leyland PR25 2SD).
They are happy for people to bring instruments and have a sing if anyone wishes to do so.
Best Wishes,
Jane, Em & Matt.

Sadly, just received the news re Brian. As half of and on behalf of KELLY & WALSH I am so sad to have missed the opportunity to bid farewell to a kind and generous man. When The Beggarmen broke up we split into several things. Terry Walsh and I formed KELLY & WALSH after Gerry Brady left for South Africa. Then our agent Jenks of the MSG called it a day. We had nowhere to go. Brian did an amazing thing. He gave me his contact book for all the clubs and bookers that he had. I spent hours contacting them all with Brian's recommendation and so slowly built up a calendar of gigs around the north of England that was second to none. And subsequently expanded further as our reputation spread. That was only possible due to the generosity of a really true friend and gentleman. He did not have to do that, yet he did. We are eternally grateful to the lad and mourn his passing.
Tony Kelly aka KELLY & WALSH

Spent three months in The Meridian Hotel, Abu Dhabi, with Brian in 1983. Unforgettable nights with him and Martin Conway.
Got a couple of fishing trips in over the next year or so and then he retired.
Just wishing now that I'd kept in contact.
A pleasure and an honour to have known him,

    So Long 'owd fettler.
