06 Nov 17 - 05:17 PM (#3887157) Subject: Lyr Req: Off to Pennsylvania From: Steve Parkes A friend of mine is looking for a song, which is not one I've heard of (unusual for me, though it's probably American -- Vaudeville not Music Hall). He writes:-- I'm looking for the words of a Music Hall song "Pennsylvania" I can only remember a snippet of the song but would like to get hold of the full words. What I can remember is - Some say no & some say yes, some say it's an awful mess, but I can tell you my address is Pennsylvania ........... Farewell Bions-- (goodbye in French) I'm off to Pennsylvania to meet my Ma & Pa. Would love it if somebody has the words. |

07 Nov 17 - 07:34 PM (#3887414) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Off to Pennsylvania From: Jack Campin There is an Irish "Off to Philadelphia", and the city and the state were often confused (I think it took me a few years to tell them apart when I was a kid, the main difference was cream cheese). Maybe widen your search to include Philadelphia songs too? |
08 Nov 17 - 01:00 AM (#3887423) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Off to Pennsylvania From: Joe Offer I've crosslinked to "Off to Philadelphia" and "Off to California" because those are the songs I know that are closest to what's requested. Is it "Off to Pennsylvania in the morning," or does it diverge from the California/Philadelphia songs at that point? -Joe- |
09 Nov 17 - 09:12 PM (#3887796) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Off to Pennsylvania From: Anglo The song you want is 'Pennsylvania'. It's on an LP by the Garret Singers, featuring Vic Gammon, and is a music hall song learned from group member John Challenger's next-door neighbor. Not American at all, though I sang it at the Philadelphia Folk Festival very many moons ago. I've never come across the song anywhere else. |
