Thought for the day - Dec. 19, 1999

Though this was probably intended to be an allegory for the Christ-child's birth, it seems appropriate for Solstice, as it is the time which reminds us, after the longest night of the year, that Spring is coming:

The Rose-Tree

Michael Praetorius
English version by Abbie Farwell Brown

There is a Rose-Tree blooming
In winter's frost and cold
To tell how Spring is coming,
With joy for young and old.

Chorus:

It is the Rose of Love,
No cruel wind can wither,
No tempest can remove.

Lo, any life that shivers
May shelter 'neath the Tree,
Each tender petal quivers,
With glowing mystery.

Chorus:

And 'mid the sweetness curled
A golden heart is hidden,
Dear treasure of the world!

A nice thought.....so I'll send it back to one of the roses in my life...

"...Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow, lies the seed that with the sun's love, in the spring..becomes the rose."

I believe this is the same as "Lo, How E'er a Rose is Blooming" by Michael Praetorius?

--Mbo (Good to see you back, 'Spaw! It's not the same without you!)

Nice song..... Rose is also Mary of course, or any woman -- "Far off, most secret and inviolable Rose...." (Maud Gonne for Yeats)
Do you know of a recorded version of this (it being Praetorius), kat?
WELCOME BACK, CP, HOW WAS YOUR TIME IN SPACE? We put your face on the milk cartons, and the Milk Marketing Board had to pull them off after 3 days because of the complaints. So we just sat in darkness and hoped.

Mbo,

Comparing the two, I find a completely different tune for the one posted above, as well as words.

Sorry, Peter, I was interrupted by a phone call whilst typing in the above and didn't see your message until posting.

The only knowledge I have of this song is the book mentioned. I can scan in the music and email it to you, if you'd like, or fax it.

So THAT'S what made the milk sour!?!!!**BG**

Hi, kat, I was really just fishing for a good recording, not the music. I have some Praetorius' recordings somewhere, so I will check it out on my own time.

Actually, the Milk Board was most upset by the belief of buyers that they had bought possum milk instead, which resulted in many trips to the bathroom....
