06 Dec 17 - 08:48 PM (#3892528) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gillver From: Jim Dixon According to Wild Goose Studios the song GILLIVER (words: Roger Watson; tune: Colin Cater) appears on Roger Watson's album "Past and Present" From the liner notes: My late grandfather, Joseph Clarke, left school in 1902 at the age of 12, and like most of his generation, entered the main industry in his Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire border community: coal mining. His first job was as a 'ganger', the local term for a pit pony driver, and this song, written in 1965, tells a story he told me, using, as far as possible, his own words. It's also on a various-artists album titled "Generosity - Folk for MS." That website provided a 40-second sound sample, from which I transcribed this: Come gather round, you ganger lads, wherever you may be, And rest yourselves a little while and listen unto me. I'll tell to you a story, and ev'ry word is true, Of Gilliver, the finest horse a ganger ever knew. I couldn't find a complete recording online, so that's the best I can do. It's also performed by Bryony on their album "Last of the Great Whales" (1986) but that might be out of print. |
