Donating to Mudcat

This is the time of year for charity, and I donate to the web pages which I use all year - wikipedia, IMSLP, abcnotation, Mudcat.

Ya know, it ought to be easier to donate to the Mudcat. I had to go to six pages before I found out how. And the page did not say whether my contribution is tax deductible.

So Max, Joe... How about putting a link for donating right on the Mudcat homepage?

From Max, in another thread:

It's costing us $1,600. I'm willing to pay it, but the mods are encouraging me to start a fundraiser to help. Just a few dollars is a-ok.

Best ways to go is Paypal:

I remember this cartoon in an Edinburgh Fringe Programme.
Queue of two persons. Q. "Is this the queue for the Becket in Japanese?"
A. "No, its the queue to give money to the Festival Fringe Society".

The UK: http://amazonUK.mudcat.org link on the https://mudcat.org/support.cfm page isn't working. Ages ago I started using http://www.amazon.co.uk/?tag=mudcatorg-21 and I am still doing so, but I don't know whether it actually results in money going to Mudcat.

Wikipedia sends an email recommending a donation, hopefully once a year. Only trouble with that is it views different email addresses as different people so you get repeats. Must be a way round that though.

That catfish at the top center of the Forum Menu has always been a link to our donation page. Sometimes is has said something about donating, and sometimes it has just been a picture of the catfish ("mudcat"). It says something about donating now - I think maybe Max changed it in answer to this or the other thread.
The current catfish is playing a fiddle. The other one jumps out of a banjo.

Yes, there it is. How nice!

It is also possible to support the Mudcat by using the right link to buy from Amazon.

Used to support by regular donation - no longer - too much interference with free speech.

I use the Amazon link and have in the past used the PayPal link Joe gives, every little helps.

Do you have to be a member to donate?

The form will not allow me to enter the amount of the donation. It stays at USD 000 no matter what I do.

Yeah, it is kind of a strange form, Joe. Your cursor should be at the final zero of the "0.00," and then you just type in the amount. It apparently allows only donations in US dollars.

Is the UK "Friends of the Mudcat" still channeling our donations through? I've lost the contact details.

Hi, Joe -
PayPal provides HTML stuff that nonprofits can paste into their Web pages for donations, and we have little control over what appears. The PayPal donation stuff used work a little better, but I was never able to get it to generate a receipt email for another nonprofit (Max did the PayPal stuff for us). I think it's sending receipts now, but now it has other idiosyncrasies like the one you encountered.

Obligation is in the eye of the beholder. I am obligated for using BS as a blog and search for research. Thanks for the tolerance and to the teachers.

Let's push this back to the top and get some donations rolling in to help Max with the fees and management involved with Mudcat.

At the top of the home page, under the blue Mudcat, is the yellow DONATE button that takes you to a PayPal page.

DONATE link - if this doesn't open properly for you, go to the home page and click. It may be the browser is taking you to a PayPal account you are already part of.

Done! Thanks heaps to Max and Mudcat moderators and members. I'm planning to be here for at least another 25 years and it has been a while since I donated.

Whenever I donate to anything at all, my left hand knoweth not what my right hand doeth and I shout it not from the rooftops. However, on this occasion the PayPal link made it difficult/impossible to enter the precise amount intended! I sort of got there in the end, but it was a weird experience...

Well I do use it, and it's a damn sight more convenient than finding my credit card and reading glasses, entering a sixteen-digit number, then the expiry date, then the CCV number, then waiting for a security code via text message, then entering it in the little box, then waiting...

One man's meat is another fat-fingered man's poison. If I avoided everything that I should avoid on principle, I'd be sitting in a cave right now chewing on mammoth blubber.

Need tech assist. All filled out and "donate now" just looks back at me when I try to click it. Or I have clicked it several times and donated a great deal more than intended. I do NOT do PayPal. I consider it obnoxiously insidious.

Dorothy, perhaps you can try another browser. I use chrome when firefox plays silly buggers.

You may need to look at your security settings - sometimes popup blockers don't allow the proper screen to popup for the transaction. But PayPal is much more robust than it used to be - I go through PayPal to pay with my credit card. It's easier on some sites that way.

Years ago I had a miserable experience with identity theft connected to Paypal. I avoid Paypal, but there are times when only Paypal will do, so I connected my Paypal account to a small savings account with only a few hundred dollars in it. Paypal would like to know all about my credit card, but I'm not telling it.

It used to be possible to mail a check to Max in Pennsylvania. Is that still doable?

I'm struggling here. I've been both a recipient and a payer on PayPal since 2004, hundreds of times. I have been paid via PayPal from the US many times without hitch. I've had many an issue with ramshackle Ebay sellers but the problem has never been with PayPal (and they have often helped me to settle issues). As with Maggie, I have one credit card linked to PayPal. I don't know who owns PayPal and, to be honest, I don't care. It has made my life easier for almost two decades, fuss-free. I have nothing to declare.
