I've found a neat site (sorry folks - no clicky blue thingy) at www.maori.org.nz - check the waiata/songs site. It's worth the wait for playing music. Listen out for how the "2nd part" will always be sung whilst the 1st is drawing breath, and vice versa...all to do with the sacredness of breath, and sustaining sound for the duration of the waiata. She said 'Come here I'll box your ear.' I said 'No fear' And I ran away. It was always sung at about double speed. The proper song is used at the start of various sports matches and there have been some diabolical versions recently. One singer couldn't remember the words and one of the sports players had to prompt her. Another singer was in the wrong key and had to start again. Hayley is one of the preferred singers but she's out of the country much of the time, around the other side of the world and the substitutes aren't always up to a decent standard. Robyn |

Hope it has dried out enough to send thanks to the contibutors to this thread. My everlovin' (who's a Kiwi) doesn't sing a lot, at least not solo, but when we were courtin' many years ago we went to a folkie dinner-party where everyone had to do a turn (as you do). She sang this song in a pure, sweet soprano and I fell in love with her all over again. It was featured at our wedding and we have loved it ever since. And now I have words, music and chords. It seems to show the song was written about 1912, and Arthur Eady & Co, made "Pokare Kare" widely known when they published a piano music score of it in 1926. This music score was copyrighted internationally. |
