Lyr Req: Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You

Don't know the title, only some words, from the B side of a 78 rpm in the 50s, not too pop, I wd guess. "Babe, I'm gonna leave you; tell you what, I'm gonna leave you; leave you when the summer, summer comes along. Your baby's gonna ride the Chelkie (Cherokee? )on the next pay day. All your furniture's gonna leave you, Yes, Yes, on the next pay day ---- And nary a cent will I be the giver---"

Sorry, I don't know what was on the A side, either. Not much to go on, sorry, but wd love any help.

Flyer,

Joan Baez did a similar song, I'll see if I can find the lyrics. Also, Led Zeppelin did a version, but I won't be checking those lyrics.

Perhaps someone else has time to search these out. Because the lyrics are not Joan's they are not on her web site.

Re the Joan Baez recording, I have it on a Vanguard vinyl of LP of about 1963. But, no lyrics on the sleeve, and my player is dead...

From: John Wood

This is in The Joan Baez Songbook (1964).

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.

Babe, I'm gonna leave you,
Tell you when I'm gonna leave you,
Leave you when ol' summer-time, summer comes a-rolling,
Leave you when ol' summer comes along.

Babe, that highway's a-callin',
That old highway's a-callin',
Callin' me to travel on, travel on out Westward,
Callin' me to travel on alone.

Babe, I'd like to stay here,
You know I'd really like to stay here,
My feet start goin' down, goin' down that highway,
My feet start goin' down, goin' down alone.

Babe, I've got to ramble,
You know I've got to ramble,
My feet start goin' down, and I got to follow,
They just start goin' down, and I got to go.

Greetings John.

Thanks to you Roger, Iain and John.

Seems I've go 2 songs conflated in my mind (one with furniture and the other with "baggage" ha ha ha.

So the other lyric has Payday in it.

Hmmmmm.

Gratefully,

Flyer

I forgot the cover note!
``One of the favorite themes in blues is that of `traveling onĀ“,moving from one place to another, finding new loves and new experiences.
This restlessness is rarely expressed so well in modern urban blues as in this song by ANNE BREDON of San Francisco.

The Led Zepp.. version is on "Zepp 2"... and I like it.... it is mainly slow with a guitar picking..... admittedly it goes heavy in one part then back to quiet again.

As a result of years of searching, mr Rosemont from the 'originalsproject'-site claims that "Anne Bredon did "record" the song, although not formally, or for public release. It's from the early 60s, not the 50s as has been erroneously written on the internet. It's a very crude recording."

For anyone interested, the full inside story regarding this song is on the link below (first song in the B-section).

I realize this thread is 10 years old, but I can tell you that the song you're looking for is "St. John's River", recorded by both Burl Ives (1953) and Erik Darling (1961). A rock group called Quicksilver Messenger Service recognized the similarities between "St. Johns River" and "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", and recorded a medley of both songs in 1967.
