I am not qualified, but I hesitate to say no, because she's disabled and can't afford a teacher. She's a classically trained pianists and knows music theory. She's seen me strum along, using chords, so I suppose that's what she wants to do, as opposed to being the next Segovia. Has anybody learned folk guitar from YouTube or a DVD that would suit? I suppose folk is what we're after, not rock or blues styles. I'm asking for recommendations, because a person can spend a lot of time wading through ineffective YouTube videos. |

I think Leonard Cohen must have learned from same book as most of his first album had that fingerprinting. Not sure it is still around but I could send you a copy of the book. Ten lessons |

Covers everything from the basics to quite advanced. They're also categorised by genre, so there's a series of lessons on 'folk fingerstyle'. Apart from Will Fly's occasional tutorials on specific tunes, Justin's is the best and most complete guitar course I 've seen on the Web. He also sells DVDs of the lessons. |

If someone can play the piano and understand it its a big help. It means they will understand intervals and chords etc so mostly its basic how to hold it, how to pick or strum it. They will also understand about why correct fingering is important and why things like scales are for a reason |

It's quite a big download (24.5mb) so it may be that I have scanned it at too high a resolution. But it should work and I reckon it's not a bad start to learning to play some folk guitar things. Thumb position in some of the pictures could be argued with but I'm sure, leeneia, you'll be able to help there. There is a sweet little entry late in the book in my handwriting of the time which says "chords learned after day 1" :) Hold Down A Chord (PDF 24.5mb) Hope it is of some use |

And it's very easy to understand and work through. If you play already I'm not sure there is a lot there that you won't know already |

We talked about how hard it is to clamp three fingers down at once, and how learning a little classical guitar helps with that, because you can "assemble" the chords. That worked better for me when I was a beginner. Nonetheless, the info on strums and patterns will come in handy. |
