Two different brands, at different times. Unfortunately, the screw plugs of these two brands are NOT interchangeable, although the SEEM to fit. You have been warned. Water can be removed from a mattress, more-or-less, with a wet-and-dry shop vac. But not invisibly. Her Indoors prefers not to have the bed connected in any way to a 240volt supply. |

NZ don't From: leeneia When I was a kid, the only solution we found to hot summer nights was to go to the public swimming pool and play in the water for hours. Afterwards we would sleep so soundly we never felt the heat. I used to think that the exercise tired us out. But now that I think about it, I suppose the water cooled us off all the way through. |

NZ don't From: JennieG A well-known trick (idea? hint? even - God forbid - hack?) here in Oz, where we really know what heat is, is to freeze a couple of water-filled drink bottles......having first left room for freeze expansion, I know about this scientific stuff......and use them as cold water bottles on hot nights. A couple of friends swear by it as a cooling agent. |

Do NOT use air conditioning (not an option for me, as there wasn't even any electricity) After a couple of nights sweating like a pig, the body acclimatises. Air con is the Devil's own invention. Wouldn't icy cold water bottles get a lot of condensation on them? One would wake up soaked to the skin! |

What kept me awake in the Tropics wasn't the heat but that awful whining buzz of the mosquitoes. Horrible sound. I usually managed to put up a mosquito net, but they used to fly round and round looking for a way in! I love heat though. I whinge dreadfully in the cold. |

A couple of years ago we were in Cordoba (the hottest place in Europe) when the temperature was over 40C. At eleven at night it was still 37! But the humidity was in single figures, and as long as you stayed out of the searing sun it was very tolerable. |

Well, my aunt had a heritage hottie from (at least) her mother, and which was made from pottery. It was as big as a loaf of bread and had a knob on one end for handling, and a ceramic screw-plug on top. It was a guaranteed wake-you-up if you touched it during the night. I just thought you ought to know that. ;-) |

Might be a different matter on the coast with its much higher humidity, though..... |

You're right about getting burned when you touched it. My mother used to wrap ours in bits of old army blanket. Kept the heat in a bit too. With absolutely no heating in the house (except for a small coal fire in the sitting room) a hot water bottle was essential. There was always ice on the inside of our bedroom windows in the morning. Lovely fern-like frosty patterns. We also had a china 'jerry' for use as a toilet during the night. It went under the bed. I can take any heat or humidity whatsoever. Love it. But I am careful about not getting burned in the tropical sun. Don't want melanomas! |

But I do remember when old books mentioned Gutta Percha. I suspect rubber wasn't common before motor vehicles. Keberoxu, frozen door locks are the reason why cans of CRC have the tiny tube. But, you have to spray inside the keyhole BEFORE it freezes. The locks don't freeze, dampness inside the locks does. |

Never saw a coal fire, always logs. When I lived there they had plenty of Hydro. In the Mainland anyway. And a huge DC 75KV link across the Cook Straight. And grass was cut every month or so. In the UK twice a week is barely enough. |
