BS: remember hot water bottles? NZ don't

NZ is suffering with about 5 ºC above average and my neice has resorted to putting bottled water in the fridge and then in the bed before bedtime.

How times have changed!

Global warming? Surely not!

Can't be warming... our... *cough... choke*... president has consulted his *akk..glurk* "science" advisors, and assures us that it is 'fake news'.

Not true, Mr Red. Hotties are available at The Warehouse stores, in winter. Two different brands, at different times.

Unfortunately, the screw plugs of these two brands are NOT interchangeable, although the SEEM to fit. You have been warned.
Water can be removed from a mattress, more-or-less, with a wet-and-dry shop vac.
But not invisibly.

Her Indoors prefers not to have the bed connected in any way to a 240volt supply.

When I was a kid, the only solution we found to hot summer nights was to go to the public swimming pool and play in the water for hours. Afterwards we would sleep so soundly we never felt the heat.

I used to think that the exercise tired us out. But now that I think about it, I suppose the water cooled us off all the way through.

I dunno. Don't you think there might be sexual undertones to hot water bottles? I mean, they're kinda wobbly like Jello, and some of the old nuns taught us that Jello could be a Near Occasion of Sin....but to go to bed with a wobbly, warm, slippery-feeling hot water bottle, well....

And you folks wonder why the thread killer thread was so meainingful to me...

A well-known trick (idea? hint? even - God forbid - hack?) here in Oz, where we really know what heat is, is to freeze a couple of water-filled drink bottles......having first left room for freeze expansion, I know about this scientific stuff......and use them as cold water bottles on hot nights. A couple of friends swear by it as a cooling agent.

In Andaluc?a in July or August, when the night minimum temperature hovers between 25 and 30 Celsius and where we have no aircon, I find that lying butt-naked on the bed uncovered and with a large fan pointing at me full-blast from two feet away ensures a good night's sleep. Down, girls. Naturally, the mozzie plug will be installed in the room.

That accent worked in the preview. When I typed the word the software put it in automatically. Wassup here! No accents allowed, no emojis allowed!

We don't want any of them thar foreign maaaarks here mate! :)

Now, I've slept in 35 degrees of heat at night (it can be 40 or more during the day) with almost maximum humidity, in Africa. Do NOT use air conditioning (not an option for me, as there wasn't even any electricity) After a couple of nights sweating like a pig, the body acclimatises. Air con is the Devil's own invention.

Wouldn't icy cold water bottles get a lot of condensation on them? One would wake up soaked to the skin!

Perhaps that's the idea, Eliza......the resulting moisture would help cool you down.

I suppose it might do, Jennie, but the bed would be a bit soggy.

What kept me awake in the Tropics wasn't the heat but that awful whining buzz of the mosquitoes. Horrible sound. I usually managed to put up a mosquito net, but they used to fly round and round looking for a way in!
I love heat though. I whinge dreadfully in the cold.

Same here. I love heat. I'm slightly less keen on humidity though. A couple of years ago we were in Cordoba (the hottest place in Europe) when the temperature was over 40C. At eleven at night it was still 37! But the humidity was in single figures, and as long as you stayed out of the searing sun it was very tolerable.

Ever wondered why those bags are called hot water 'Bottles?'
Well, my aunt had a heritage hottie from (at least) her mother, and which was made from pottery. It was as big as a loaf of bread and had a knob on one end for handling, and a ceramic screw-plug on top.

It was a guaranteed wake-you-up if you touched it during the night.

I just thought you ought to know that. ;-)

Here in inland Oz humidity is usually fairly low, so I suspect any dampness caused by condensation from melting ice in a plastic bottle would be dry before one even knew it was there.

Might be a different matter on the coast with its much higher humidity, though.....

Good gracious Gurney, we all had those beige-coloured stone china hot water-bottles just after the War. Nobody had a rubber one.

You're right about getting burned when you touched it. My mother used to wrap ours in bits of old army blanket. Kept the heat in a bit too.

With absolutely no heating in the house (except for a small coal fire in the sitting room) a hot water bottle was essential. There was always ice on the inside of our bedroom windows in the morning. Lovely fern-like frosty patterns.
We also had a china 'jerry' for use as a toilet during the night. It went under the bed.
I can take any heat or humidity whatsoever. Love it. But I am careful about not getting burned in the tropical sun. Don't want melanomas!

You hot-weather lovers would be unhappy over here today.
Car locks are frozen solid on autos parked outside overnight.

Senoufou, I've only ever seen the one like that, but then, I'm only a stripling of 76..... But I do remember when old books mentioned Gutta Percha. I suspect rubber wasn't common before motor vehicles.

Keberoxu, frozen door locks are the reason why cans of CRC have the tiny tube. But, you have to spray inside the keyhole BEFORE it freezes.
The locks don't freeze, dampness inside the locks does.

I do remember George Mikes' book "How to be an Alien", about a Hungarian living in England in the post-war time. The whole chapter six of his book is:

SEX

Continental people have sex life; the English have hot-water bottles.

Mr. Red:

Doesn't NZ have plenty of that clean, clean coal? ;-)

Never saw a coal fire, NZ is considered geologically young, so doubt much coal. Never saw a coal fire, always logs. When I lived there they had plenty of Hydro. In the Mainland anyway. And a huge DC 75KV link across the Cook Straight.

And grass was cut every month or so. In the UK twice a week is barely enough.
