12 Feb 18 - 11:58 PM (#3905289) Subject: Need Help From: Mick Lowe When I was about 16 or 17 (which was a long time ago) and trying to learn how to play the guitar I bought a music book which I think was entitled "100 American Folk Songs" and possibly had a reference to Pete Seeger. I recall the front cover was predominately white. Trouble is I gave/loaned it to my brother who sadly is no longer with us and I'd like to get another copy of it.. I've been through Amazon and ebay, can't find anything that fits the bill. Is there anyone here on Mudcat recogonise that book I am talking about and if so be able to tell me the correct title. |

I'm thinking the book may have been published by Robbins, which had songbooks that measured 6 inches by 9 inches; or by CPP Belwin and Dover, which were 9 by 12 inches. -Joe- P.S. I have a Robbins cowboy songs book that I guard with my life. Those Robbins books are terrific. Both of Dave's books are readily available, for cheap. Here's a link to 124 Folk Songs: (click) And 104: (click) My suspicion is that 124 is an expanded revision of 104. The Robbins books changed the color of book covers from one printing to the next - so you might have the wrong color cover, but still have the right book. I'd go with the Mo Asch book, whether it's the right one or not. It's likely to be good. -Joe- |

Can't tell you what color the cover was, because the front cover of mine is long gone. |

Most music books in the UK are that size, The exception to that rule is the ton of Irish music books I have. Soodlums are about 6x9 I think (all my stuff is still in the middle of the Atlantic. When I bought this book in question I'd very little musical knowledge, as I said I was about 16 and been weened on the Beatles/Stones etc along with the likes of the Desert Song or Mario Lanza. Most of the songs in the book were basic 3 chords so once I figured out the melody it was easy playing and singing them. Most of the tunes I'd never heard of. I do recall some of them; St James' Infirmary Midnight Special Jam on Jerry's Rocks (never learnt that one but would love to do so) Froggie Went A Courtin. This Land is Your Land etc etc. The reason for the resurgance of interest of mine is a few years back whilst still in England I saw a tv show of Bruce Springsteen playing with the Seeger Session Musicians. It kind of re awoke my interest in music. Now I'm living in the U.S. would could be better for the 4th July than doing a session of American folk songs. And thanks Joe for the welcome back...I'd forgotten not only the music but how much I missed this forum. The best on the internet by far. Turns out to be the Penguin book of American Folk Songs "edited/collected" by Alan Lomax and not Pete Seeger.. In my defence it was a lot of years ago I bought this book. Anyway I have just ordered a used copy off Amazon, not at $3,000 I hasten to add (yes there is on on there at that price), but it did make me go and look up a bio of Alan Lomax. I thought he was English since my only remembered reference to him was the Alan Lomax Trio on the quadruple album "Electric Muse" where they were playing "Hard Case", a brilliant song. A very interesting man. Shame he is dead.. I would love to have had a in depth conversation with him. |

It's not one that I use every day, so it took me a good ten minutes to find it on the shelf. It was very helpful to know that the size was A4 (Americans now know what A4 is, because it's marked on our photocopy machines). I wonder why Penguin used so many sizes for its songbooks. It is a good book so it's not 16 bucks down the toilet I'm now just curious trying to think what the original book I bought like 40 years ago was. The trouble with age is the memory wears out as fast as your joints. |
