Hello Mudcat folks,

The wonderful Marc Brierley who released two fabulous albums in the late 60s but retired from the music scene in 1973 is returning to live performance.

Between 1968 and 1970 he wrote and recorded the LPs, “Welcome to the Citadel” and “Hello” on the CBS Label, together with four singles. He was a frequent artist on the London club scene, playing alongside contemporaries, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart. Future luminaries John Martyn and Nick Drake numbered among his followers during these early days, usually seated in the front row with their eyes glued to his fingers.

From 1970 to 1973, Marc Brierley toured extensively in the UK, working both solo and with guitarist Steve Cross. He played major events such as John Dankworth and Cleo Lane’s Wavenden Season; opened the 1973 tour for Traffic at Birmingham Town Hall and Fairport Convention’s UK autumn tour.

At the end of 1973, Marc Brierley retired from the whole music scene for family reasons and 2017 marked his re-entry to live performance. Marc Brierley’s records were re-released on Cherry Red in 2014 and various songs have also appeared on many vinyl and CD anthologies.

Marc is playing a one off gig in Southport, if any North West folk are interested, the event is here on facebook:

He will be singing a selection of songs from “Citadel”, “Hello”, the singles, 1970s writing and his most recent new writing.

Park Golf Club, Southport, Friday Feb 23rd, 8pm.

Rich.

Hi Sandman

Yeah he sings too, accompanied by guitar.

I don't have his EPs but I first heard 'Atlantic City' on a folk compilation which I think was first on one of those early EPs.

Hopefully I'll get a few along to see him return to live shows.

Take it easy,
Rich.

Dick, I'm afraid that the information in the notes on that EP are largely fabricated. Marc never worked as a potter. He did study pottery when he was at the same college as I was training to be a teacher. We lived in the same flat at one time and the false biography, written I seem to remember by Austin John Marshall (butI cannot check this) in those EP notes were a source of considerable humour.
