24 Feb 18 - 06:29 PM (#3907725) Subject: Lyr Req: The Parting Glass and another song From: Kampervan Hi there My sister is trying to trace version of The Parting Glass that she heard where it was sung alongside a second, interlinked song. She has no idea what the second song was, but the two intertwined beautifully and she would love to hear it again. Does anyone have any idea what it might have been? OK, it's a long shot, but this is the place where we might just get an answer! Cheers K/van |

24 Feb 18 - 06:45 PM (#3907733) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Parting Glass sung with another song From: Joe Offer Sounds intriguing, Kampervan. Hope you don't mind the slight change I made in the thread title, so people won't come here telling you how to find "The Parting Glass," which I'm sure you know how to do. Seems to me I've heard "Parting Glass" with a "partner song," but I can't recall what the other song was. There's a technical name for "partner song." The first word that came to mind was "quodlibet," but I don't think that's the right word. -Joe- |

I also thought that there had to be a technical name for what I was looking for but couldn't recall ever having heard it. Here's hoping! K/van |
24 Feb 18 - 10:16 PM (#3907772) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Parting Glass sung with another song From: GUEST,Kristoffer Ross Probably not it, but Shaun Davey put the parting glass to a new melody for the film Waking Ned Devine. That version is usually performed with the first verse in the traditional melody, and the subsequent ones in Shaun Davey's new setting. It's been done by the Voice Squad, The High Kings, and Celtic Woman. The High Kings- The Parting Glass (This is from their highly polished early years: not my favorite) Best, Kristoffer |
24 Feb 18 - 11:21 PM (#3907775) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Parting Glass sung with another song From: Helen Hi Kampervan, Scroll down to a list of recordings of this song It usually helps to have a little more information about the singer(s) - male, female, a group, a choir, a band etc - musicians, instruments, where and when the song was heard e.g. on a radio program, on TV, on a recording, (i.e. who, what, where, when) and anything your sister can remember about the song. More information may jog the memories of the people looking for the songs. Ed Sheeran's version Understated and beautiful, in my opinion. Helen |

03 Mar 18 - 05:32 AM (#3909173) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Parting Glass sung with another song From: Tattie Bogle It's not the " Kind Friends and Companions" one which Sheila Stewart used to sing? According to the thread on "the other Parting Glass", the Chieftains also recorded it. Or "When First we Met" by Alan Bell?(variously wrongly described as a Scottish or Irish song - it's English!). Or "Auld Lang Syne" to the older tune? Or Iain Sinclair's "Tak a dram afore ye go"? Also try looking through the other Parting Glass threads that are on here. |

I made up a story about finding the words to a song in an old cinema they were demolishing near Swinton Folk Club and then proceeded to sing the first verse of 'Chantilly Lace' to the tune of the Parting Glass. First sung verse that is - From 'Chantilly Lace' to 'ooh baby that's what I like'. It works! :D tG |
