BS: Tories buy DUP vote on school meals

15 Mar 18 - 09:58 AM (#3911184)

Just when you thought that the Tories could not sink any lower than using the Russian nerve agent fiasco to mask passing legislation removing free school meals for thousands of the poorest children, they then do this.

Buy the DUP vote by excluding the poor in Norther Ireland.

The sooner this shower of shits are kicked out the better.

You can sign a Labour Party petition on their website against the school meal changes. That was put up even before this news about the DUP.

From their email to members:

Steve, tomorrow the Tories plan to change the rules on free school meals, which could see one million of the poorest children lose out.

For some of these children, that means losing out on the chance to have one hot meal in their day.

For the parents — many already struggling under the weight of Tory cuts — this is yet more proof that the Tories won't keep their promises, and won't prioritise the many.

Families don't deserve this. Let's tell Theresa May loud and clear that we won't stand for it.

Only Labour will make sure every primary school child has a free school meal. A Labour government would tax private schools to pay for meals for all primary school children - because a Labour education system will work for the many, not the few.

If you stand with Labour, and the thousands of families who'll lose out, please sign today.

This attack on childrens' free school meals doesn't apply in Scotland but still the Scottish Tories voted for it in Westminster. Their vote would t count as this is a devolved matter but they still showed their solidarity with Theresa May's vindictive government.

It's come to a sad situation when unfortunate schoolchildren are denied a hot, nourishing meal, probably (as said above) the only one in 24hrs. Of all the things to make cuts on, this is way beyond the realms of the acceptable.
I knew my pupils well when I was teaching, and those on free dinners really did need them.
It's no good accusing their parents of fecklessness. It's the children themselves that matter here.

16 Mar 18 - 04:57 PM (#3911464)
Subject: RE: BS: Tories buy DUP vote on school meals
From: Backwoodsman

I worked full-time for 49 years - almost 50 - worked my butt off, never claimed Benefits, paid my taxes, paid my own way in the world, still paying my taxes on my pension. I don't begrudge my tax-pounds going to provide children with meals - it's not the fault of the child that his/her family is poor, no matter what the cause of that poverty. Targeting hungry children to finance tax-cuts for corporations and the wealthy is immoral, and those championing it are beneath contempt.

Steve, you're right, of course, but there's a lot of noise in the media and on social media about 'parents who have money for fags/booze/mobile phones/yadda yadda, but no money to feed their kids' etc. The usual nasty Daily Fail/Scum/Torygraph bollocks.

Hence my point about not targeting children, no matter what the cause of their poverty might be.

Subject: RE: BS: Tories buy DUP vote on school meals
From: Senoufou

Er, I'm well aware of that Steve. Yet even though I vote Conservative, I don't have to agree with every single one of their proposals or policies.
I agree with you Backwoodsman, I have no objection to my hard-earned pension being taxed in order that children might eat. And neither does my minimum-waged toiling husband (I've just asked him!) And he votes Conservative too by the way.

16 Mar 18 - 05:38 PM (#3911473)
Subject: RE: BS: Tories buy DUP vote on school meals
From: Steve Shaw

The modern capitalist world entitles everyone to a smartphone, a flat-screen telly, a games console and a bottle of booze. You can't give people aspirations then deny them. That isn't how capitalism works. Make them buy the stuff then, preferably, put them into debt to pay for it. All I'd say is that it's a damn sight easier to demonise the guy on benefits with the unjustifiable flat-screen telly than it is to demonise the non-doms and the oligarchs and the offshore Barclay billionaires. That's capitalism too.

16 Mar 18 - 05:53 PM (#3911478)
Subject: RE: BS: Tories buy DUP vote on school meals
From: Senoufou

I think that many people who demonise those on Benefits, in social housing etc don't actually know anyone among that group. They probably never come across them in their daily lives. It's a good idea to have a chat with anybody at a bus stop, in a McDonald's, in the supermarket checkout queue and so on. I always do, and people always respond. It's a lovely way to listen to someone else and hear their point of view. That way I learned in Asda that a young mum with her child and trolley found it hard to afford groceries, and was struggling. I talk to youngsters and find they're having trouble getting a job. People open up very readily when one is prepared to listen.
Once one views all human beings as equally important and understands their lives a bit, one has no objection to helping those worse off than oneself.

16 Mar 18 - 05:58 PM (#3911479)
Subject: RE: BS: Tories buy DUP vote on school meals
From: Backwoodsman

I still think you're missing my point, Steve, which is that hungry children are not to blame for their own family's poverty - they are the innocent victims, whatever and whoever the cause of that poverty - and it is immoral and vindictive in the extreme to deny them sustenance on the basis of, "Their parents don't care enough to provide for them, why should the taxpayer?".

Which, of course is precisely the POV taken by Bozo in his above post.

16 Mar 18 - 07:16 PM (#3911491)

I'm not missing that point - I'm enlarging on it! Like most egotistical bastards I hasten to make me own point, but don't doubt for a second that I take yours on board - as always, except when you 'ave a go like wot you occasionally do! :-)

Surely it is far better to admit children to hospital to recover from malnutrition to increase the hospital waiting times for people who are to lazy to be on 6 figure salaries and be able to afford private health care. Let's face it, how many people who work in burger bars have actually pulled their finger out to get a job as a CEO of the listed public company.

Subject: RE: BS: Tories buy DUP vote on school meals

Gentle persuasion may well work a little better, Dave...

My Grandad on Mum's side always voted Tory, basically because in those days the Catholic priests from the pulpit told him to vote Tory and always promoted king and country above all. Even though he worked all his life in Salford docks! To him, Labour meant commies, and, today, the likes of the Daily Mail are peddling the same line. What we need is really good political education in this country. I know from first-hand experience that the very suggestion of that gets you branded as a subversive commie by the Tories. I don't want to sound patronising but I'll say this anyway: working-class people who vote Tory have been hoodwinked, partly by the Tory Party populist machine but mainly by the Tories' media lackeys. Everything Senoufou says about her life experiences and her husband's life experiences screams anti-Tory. But what can you do...

Dave Hanson, may I offer you a piece of advice? When trying to put your point of view forward and attempting to change someone's political stance, it might be better not to call them a wanker, a twat and accuse them of having no brains. Those epithets hardly convince someone that you are anything but a rude and abusive person, and are a poor representative of your cause.

Eliza, I really do have a great deal of respect for you and I also have a very close friend who is a dyed in the wool Tory. I am happy with genuine political discourse but I would like to bring the following post on another thread to your attention

All the talk on the TV this morning is about childhood obesity. Maybe the removal of free school meals is evidence of our government's concern over child health.

Can you honestly align yourself to such nonsense?

That was from me. I'd been watching channel 5's Wright Stuff where childhood obesity was a subject for discussion and later on, in the BBC's Daily Politics, Labour's claims on the School Dinners subject were summed up as using statistics to mis-inform. It seemed to me that this whole thread would benefit from a soupcon of dismissal and humour.

Just in jest of course :-)

Our village school (which I've visited quite a few times during the school day for various reasons, including a charity lunch) offers excellent lunches for the children. There are healthy options and the menus worked out to be nutritious and attractive to the children.

If any child was poor and their parent/s unable to give them decent food, these school dinners would be a godsend.

Our school dinners in the fifties were absolutely ghastly. I could hardly bear to eat much of the food we were given. I particularly remember spam fritters, and reconstituted potato powder. The greens were boiled to destruction and the rock-hard jam tart had artificial cream splodged on. Our family was quite hard up, but not 'poor' as such, and my mother gave us wholesome, nourishing stuff; eggs, minced beef, rabbit casserole, lots of home-grown vegetables and so on. We were lucky, but many children today are not.

I bet you wouldn't say that about the spam fritters served up at our school just after the war Steve. They were cooked well in advance, the batter was greasy and stone cold. The spam was very poor quality and one's knife could hardly cut the thing.

I was making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, and a supper of broccoli and cauliflower with rich cheese sauce, and wondered if the youngsters today even know how to make a sauce or a batter from scratch. Or mince, with suet dumplings, scrag end of neck of lamb casserole. Or even any kind of pastry. Those were true cucina povera. School dinners were cucina merda!

I'll not stand by and see Spam fritters dissed, I tell you. The other thing I lived and breathed for was that lurid pink blocky blancmange. I loved that stuff, and the thicker the pellicle-like skin on top the better.

Speaking of things of beauty, I found some Portuguese custard tarts in Truro Tesco's yesterday. They were the absolute real McCoy, just as good as the ones I devoured every day in Madeira last September. 70p each they are in the freshly-baked section and worth double that. The M&S four-in-a-pack version pales in comparison (though they're grand in an emergency). Don't buy them in Nando's. I did, and they were rancid crap.
