I thought this might be of interested to all the folk fans on this forum...

Barking Folk Festival is taking place again this year, on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June 2018.

It's a FREE family festival celebrating the best in English and World folk music and dance plus poetry, street theatre, art and family fun!

English folk group The Unthanks, will headline the Sunday that will be a female led concert exploring the ‘art of protest’ – other exciting acts include award winning singer-songwriter Lucy Ward, folk singer-songwriter Grace Petrie as well as more acts to follow.

Saturday’s line up includes high energy punk folk act Ferocious Dog as well as more acts and an headliner to be announced shortly!

There will also be:
Live music, crafts and carnival workshops
Crafters and stalls
Street theatre and circus shows
Delicious street food

Good to hear that this is continuing.

After all the bitching last year about fringe events perhaps you could set a trend by organising fringe spaces that people have to pay to use.

I recall a well respected bunch of East Anglian musicians taking over the bar of a pub in Whitby being asked to leave by the landlady as none of them was actually spending any money in the place.

A "stirring" post, guest.
She would probably have asked them to leave even if they weren't musicians, if they were just sitting there not drinking. And I suppose buying drinks and food doesn't count as paying for space to play?
Go away and play with your "android" friends, you know, the ones with the wire coming out of their ear, who are so busy listening to music they don't bother to produce any themselves.

It is when they produce their own flasks and sandwiches that the publican gets really pissed off.

Fringe venue...?????

I spent many a weekend boozing in Barking with mates in a rock covers band
who ran sessions in an Irish pub near the Abbey Park.

The lock ins were epic - all nighters...

Forget the name of the pub, but somewhere in my hazy memory they had a rotweiler who patrolled on a flat extension roof...

If I have located the corrrect spot on the map, it now looks like it's some kind of poncy food bar...?????

I'll ask the mrs, see if she remembers...

I'm certain it was on a corner, which narrows down on google maps to possibly either where something called Christinas steak is,
or..
now seeming more likely, a derelict looking unmarked building on the corner of London Rd and North St...?????

Sad - http://www.barkinganddagenhampost.co.uk/news/last-orders-for-barking-and-dagenham-s-pubs-as-more-than-half-have-closed-since-2001-according-to-new-digures-1-4981315

[blue clicky won't work]

For 15 years I lost many weekends in pubs in East London and Essex Border..
I moved back to South West England in 2000...

Probably all them bloody folkies driving the customers away and bringing their flasks and sandwiches were a contributory factor. That's apart from Maggie Thatcher who managed to put a pound on the price of a pint almost overnight.

And I hate to say this but apart from students the only people I have seen either not buying drinks OR producing their own is them bloody folkies.

Are ANY sessions in the pipeline ? Last time I was there , there was a sort of open mic in an upstairs bar overloooking the river .
