appreciation for Mavis Staples

When my car radio is turned on,
it is a pleasant surprise to hear the voice of Mavis Staples.

There are two ways that her singing can be heard
on local FM radio stations,
not counting the public radio networks supported by subscribers.

One: the station plays the Staples Singers oldies hit records.
Two: the station plays Mavis Staples' recent albums.
Neither one happens often enough.

Mavis Staples is a household word
in the virtual household that is the Mudcat membership.
But she hasn't a thread of her own -- until now.
Of course, as Mudcat threads do, it will probably drift and creep
and include other topics.

Oh, you ask which local FM radio station plays
the recent solo/collaboration studio recordings of Mavis Staples?

It is the much-maligned WUMB-FM station
at the University of Massachusetts campus
on Boston's South Shore sort of.
Maligned, I say, because old Mudcat posts about WUMB
are scathing in their criticism of how commercial the station is
and how unsupportive of traditional music.

The fact remains that
WUMB-FM, which as a newbie I just discovered a month or two ago,
plays more of this out-of-the-mainstream music stuff
than all the other FM stations put together.

The song broadcast by WUMB-FM
was
"Build A Bridge"
from the Mavis Staples Album,
If All I Was Was Black.

Sadly,
Yvonne Staples, Mavis' sister,
has just passed away.
I don't know when Yvonne Staples stopped performing,
but it seems to me as though
Mavis performed/recorded without her sister Yvonne
since the death of their father Roebuck "Pops" Staples
and their older sister Cleotha.
