BS: The Broons and Oor Wullie

I was in Alnwick a few days ago and popped into the famous Barter Books s/h bookshop - and came across several annuals of The Broons and Oor Wullie. Of course, having spent my early years in Glasgow in the 1940s, I just had to buy a compilation of the cartoons, called "The Roaring Forties". As funny now as they were then!

Any other 'Catter have memories of this great cartoon family?

Oh yes Will! The Sunday Post! He was always sitting on his upturned bucket. Great find, and probably worth a bit now.

By the way, I rented a bedsit in a Glasgow 'close' (in Partick) and there were people like the 'Broons' everywhere. Lovely folk. (This was the early Seventies)

Certainly, the Sunday Post was a very popular newspaper in the North East during my younger days (and it probably still is). I used to get a Broons annual every Christmas for years; this post will probably make me hunt them out now. Jings, help ma boab!

As I recall, The Broons Annual alternated with an Oor Wullie Annual, though they were both published together in later years.

Crivens!

I do not know those cartoons at all but have fond memories of "The Perishers" in the Daily Mirror. I also remember "The Cloggies" by Bill Tidy which involved a North West Morris side. Was that the Mirror too?

Sorry Will. Don't meant to hijack your thread :-)

I have PM'd you about another matter btw.

I liked Denis the Menace with his dog Gnasher, in the Beano. The Beano and the Dandy cost 2d each, and a liquorice skipping rope was 2d too. So for my weekly pocket money of 6d I could chew all the liquorice while I read my comics from cover to cover. Bliss.

I pay for the Beono to be delivered to my Grandsons every week. They love it.

I discovered the Broons and Oor Wullie when I bought some old annuals at a jumble sale. How they got down to The Isle of Wight frae bonny scotland is anyone's guess.

Our village garage is run by a chap and his father, who's called Denis. The father is a rather crusty old chap and we all secretly call him 'Denis the Menace'. I'm pretty certain he knows this; nothing's a secret in a small village.

I used to get the Dandy and the Beano as a small child, then graduated to the Wizard, Rover, etc. Some lads I knew bought the Eagle - bit posh for me, but I loved the Mekon and the Treens in the Dan Dare serial.

My father had a collection of Greyfriars Annuals from the 1930s, which I still have - very thick pages, almost cardboard like - with the usual characters, Harry Wharton, Billy Bunter, etc.

There's a fascinating essay by George Orwell on these school story magazines, meticulously dissected, though he made one mistake - he couldn't believe they were the work of one writer, which they were (Frank Richards).

Frank Richards - real name Charles Hamilton.

So this is where Sir Terry Pratchett
got his Wee Free Men
and their battle cry of "Crivens".

It may well be, keberoxu. The "Wee Free" is an affectionate Scottish term (for a church).

When I used to be involved with prisoners' wives and visit them at home, I once wallpapered a child's bedroom with Denis the Menace wallpaper for him (chosen by his mum) It actually looked very jolly!

As far as I know Oor Willie never made it to Australia, but Beano & other comics did. I vaguely remember a girl's comic with the title Judy

I've just had a lovely time chasing Oor Wullie & this image makes this a music thread!

I copied it to show the 8-16 year old musicians who attend a traditional Australian music workshop I'm involved with as it shows a typical? (pre-radio & TV) family musical evening, tho similar Australian evenings probably didn't include a kilted piper!

The younger kids love our vintage one-man-band (washboard with attached bicycle bells, cow bells & horn with perished rubber bulb) so would probably enjoy banging the saucepan, baking dish, cake ring? & kettle instrument.

I used to read Judy too Sandra, when I was about ten I think. Didn't it have 'The Four Marys' in it?
I've just realised that Dennis the Menace is spelled with two n's.

Sandra, the friend I mentioned up above has lived here in NZ for over 40 years, although originally a Glaswegian.
It is possible to get them.

I just ask. I'm a couple of years behind, though.
