17 May 18 - 11:51 AM (#3925236) Subject: BS: The Broons and Oor Wullie From: Will Fly I was in Alnwick a few days ago and popped into the famous Barter Books s/h bookshop - and came across several annuals of The Broons and Oor Wullie. Of course, having spent my early years in Glasgow in the 1940s, I just had to buy a compilation of the cartoons, called "The Roaring Forties". As funny now as they were then! Any other 'Catter have memories of this great cartoon family? |

The Beano and the Dandy cost 2d each, and a liquorice skipping rope was 2d too. So for my weekly pocket money of 6d I could chew all the liquorice while I read my comics from cover to cover. Bliss. |

19 May 18 - 07:17 AM (#3925666) Subject: RE: BS: The Broons and Oor Wullie From: Will Fly I used to get the Dandy and the Beano as a small child, then graduated to the Wizard, Rover, etc. Some lads I knew bought the Eagle - bit posh for me, but I loved the Mekon and the Treens in the Dan Dare serial. My father had a collection of Greyfriars Annuals from the 1930s, which I still have - very thick pages, almost cardboard like - with the usual characters, Harry Wharton, Billy Bunter, etc. There's a fascinating essay by George Orwell on these school story magazines, meticulously dissected, though he made one mistake - he couldn't believe they were the work of one writer, which they were (Frank Richards). |

I vaguely remember a girl's comic with the title Judy I've just had a lovely time chasing Oor Wullie & this image makes this a music thread! I copied it to show the 8-16 year old musicians who attend a traditional Australian music workshop I'm involved with as it shows a typical? (pre-radio & TV) family musical evening, tho similar Australian evenings probably didn't include a kilted piper! The younger kids love our vintage one-man-band (washboard with attached bicycle bells, cow bells & horn with perished rubber bulb) so would probably enjoy banging the saucepan, baking dish, cake ring? & kettle instrument. sandra |
