30 May 18 - 06:17 PM (#3928086) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 2nd verse of song 'You don't know' From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Anne - your first verse is usually the chorus to the song (see the version here in the DT: You Don't Know My Mind). I've listened to at least half a dozen versions of this from Leadbelly to Western Swing to Doc Watson to Huch Laurie(!) to Appalachian to Ella Fitzgerald and a few others and none of them have your second verse. Do you know the source for your version? Mick |

You see me laughin', laughin' just to keep from cryin'. I said to papa,"Can you stand to see me cry?" He said, "gal, I can stand to see you die." He said he didn't want me, I wasn't good enough, I'm gonna get myself another man and call his bluff. I'm not good lookin', I don't dress fine, But I'm the kind of woman who will take her time. 31 May 18 - 03:57 PM (#3928301) Subject: RE: Req: 2nd verse of 'You don't know my mind' From: Joe Offer One problem with Michael Taft's blues lyrics book, Talkin' to Myself, is that the book is indexed only by the performer. There is no title index. There is an online concordance that helped me find two versions, but I can't make it identify the sources of the two versions. Anyhow, here they are: I went to the race track : my man *on derby* won Give the money to another gal : and wouldn't give me none You don't know : you don't know my mind When you see me laughing : laughing to keep from crying I said now papa : can you stand to see me cry He said yes woman : I could stand to see you die Fed my daddy : with plenty of jellyroll Pull the shoes off my feet : let me out in the cold Going down to the river : take a rope and a rock Tie it around my neck : and jump off the dock Ain't no one : can change my mind I've been mistreated : and I don't mind dying Going to get me some poison : kill myself Because the man I love : has put me on the shelf If he didn't want me : he didn't have to lie The day I see him : that's the day he'll die Baby : you don't know my mind When you see me laughing : I'm laughing just to keep from crying A crooked man's worse : than crooked dice With dice you lose your money : with your man you lose your life I'm going to get me a razor : and a gun Cut him if he stands still : shoot him if he runs |
31 May 18 - 04:21 PM (#3928312) Subject: ADD version: You Don't Know My Mind From: Joe Offer Here's my transcription of the Hugh Laurie recording, which I really like. I got with help from a variety of lyrics sites. Laurie says he got the song from Leadbelly. YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND (from Hugh Laurie recording, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE7FHPPCCRA) Walking down the levee with my head hangin' low Looking for my mama but she ain't here no more Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying She won't cook my dinner, won't wash my clothes Won't do nothing but walk the road Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying My breakfast on the table and my coffee's getting cold And mama's in the kitchen gettin' sweet papa told (???) Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying Sometimes I think my baby's too good to die Sometimes I think she should be buried alive Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying I wish I had a nickel, I wish I had a dime I wish I hadn't give myself a bad woman's time (??) Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying Look at you mama, see what you gone and done You got my money now you broke and run Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind When you see me laughing, I'm laughing just to keep from crying You made me get mad and you made me get sad The going gets tougher than you ain't never had Baby you don't know, you don't know my mind When you see me laughing, laughing just to keep from crying. When you see me laughing, laughing just to keep from crying. 31 May 18 - 04:43 PM (#3928319) Subject: RE: Req: 2nd verse of 'You don't know my mind' From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Joe - the versions by Jimmy Martin, Tony Rice et al, JD Crowe and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (Circle Be Unbroken - I can't see the video on youtube here in uk) are a different song. That's more of a country song, sometimes known as Honey, You Don't Know My Mind. I know - I listened to all those versions too! And as Big Al says, not Helen Shapiro - which was just "You Don't Know". A super voice from my childhood that was sadly overtaken by the advent of The Beatles and the 60s uk bands. Mick |

01 Feb 19 - 06:25 PM (#3974466) Subject: Actual full lyric transcription from recording From: GUEST,Liam Actually, Anne, and to all of you here, The lyrics that Anne posted are actually from NONE OF THOSE SONGS. It is actually from AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TUNE Very coincidentally bearing the same title, lyrics, and mood. The lyrics sound incriminatingly familiar to a tune that I have a fondness for, a song penned by Erik Darling (former member of the Tarriers, 1956 and the Weavers, 1963) and recorded by him on his 1963 Vanguard LP, “Train Time” (named after a very popular tune that the Weavers also recorded) Just entitled “You Don’t Know” I know the song because a 1960’s-era folk group The Serendipity Singers, recorded it on an LP released on Philips Records the following year. But anyways, I actually want to know what recording of the song you heard, Anne, because as far as I am concerned there has only been about 2 recordings I know of currently. And also to answer your question... “YOU DON’T KNOW MY MIND” (Words and music by Erik Darling) © 1963 Ryerson Music Publishing, Co. — BMI. (transcribed from Erik and Serendipities’ recording, respectively.) (First verse) You don’t know You don’t know You don’t know My mind You don’t know You don’t know You don’t know My mind You maybe thinkin’ that I’m laughing But I’m just tryin’ to keep from cryin’ (Second verse) You been gone You been gone Almost all night long You been gone You been gone Almost all night long Oh, you can tell me that you love me But I can’t love you when you’re gone (Third verse) Early in the mornin’ I got down I went on my way Early in the mornin’ I got down I went on my way And I could hear those birds a-singin’ I knew there’d be a better day And I could hear those birds a-singin’ Way down in my soul (Repeat first verse) You maybe thinkin’ that I’m laughing... (End of song) I was actually pretty stumped when I saw your question at first because I didn’t realize there were actually so many songs bearing the name “You Don’t Know” Anyways, your welcome My best - Liam - P.
