It is truly the end of an era.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.
Repent, Harlequin, Said the Tick-Tock Man.

And so many others. Rest in peace.

It's all in print somewhere. It was he who insisted that the first words on the moon were:

"it's some sort of dust I can move it with my feet"

because the immortal lines were said on the last rung of the ladder before Armstrong took the small step/giant leap

and before we get too pedantic, there was a minute's delay while the video was processed in Hollywood, but the audio (no processing) had to be added with delay. And this was indeed a first for the methodology.

And Harlan had no qualms about pedantry, or scientific accuracy.

yea, yea. "the Eagle has landed" WOULD be pedantic

I thought "The Invisible Man" was H G Wells (as science fiction)
The non-sf version was Ralph Ellison

I already miss Harlan for the regular book reviews he used to do for "The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction"

R.I.P.

I used to love the SciFi Channels The Buzz. Back when the SciFi/SiFi channel had science fiction and original shows and movies, and not so much pro wrestling and Braveheart.

I grew up with Star Trek, and the City on the Edge of Forever was monumental. I confess I knew more about the art on the covers of his books than their innards, but I'm quite sure I've read a load of his short stories.

Harlan Ellison in addition to being a creative wrier devoted a lot of energy to mentoring younger writers and to organizing forums that were open to younger writers.

Nice movie based on Harlan's writing, personality, and a few opinions: "Dreams With Sharp Teeth" from 2008. Worth a watch for fans of S.F. although apparently he liked to be termed a "fantassist".

"The non-sf version was Ralph Ellison"
