Frankly for a sport of 'hit it where they are not' tennis would be a far more exciting quick paced game as a team sport with seven players on each side. Are they going to prop up an aged Royal to present a trophy again? As for the outfits they are all relatively modest. There should be an optional G string and topless tournament if revenues are truly valued. |

They didn't grunt every time they hit the ball, or chuck their rackets on the ground, or bellow, "You can not be serious!" etc. They played in several teams when I was a child, and were really very good. But it was a sport not a status symbol (just after the War). No strawberries and cream, no designer outfits, just cheap Dunlop plimsolls and whatever white clothes they could muster. My father also played in a Norfolk badminton team in his seventies, and it kept him busy after my mother died. I was a swimmer, horse-rider and ice-skater, and played hockey for my school. But tennis - nah. |

Tennis is bloody Dullsville, compared with badminton, real tennis and, most especially, squash. Tennis is too much about physical advantage, for a start (you'll never serve an ace against a decent player in the others), too much about power (tennis players seem to spend most of their time hitting the ball as hard as they can, or near as dammit), and I've yet to hear players of any of the other variations routinely & noisily grunting & groaning (or shrieking) their way through a match. I don't mind watching a bit of tennis, don't get me wrong, but it is the runt of the litter. A 100m sprint stretched out to marathon length. With lots of stops for a rest. Endless dull baseline rallies. An almost complete lack of subtlety & strategy - overpower your opponent, or wait for them to make a mistake. Quite why it's the richest & most popular of the main four racquet sports is beyond me. And don't get me started on tennis & the Olympics! |

We were often allowed to choose which of a several sports we wanted and all the skivers like me went for tennis. So we had dozens more people waiting than the two courts could accommodate, so naturally we generously always let the people who actually wanted to play go first. We could go the whole season without actually playing at all. Cricket was nearly as good. Half the time you were not playing, and the other half by picking the right fielding spot you didn't play either. |

From: Bonzo3legs My favourite spectator sport is polo, which we used to watch regularly at Kenney Jones's Hurtwood Park Polo Club - incidentally his recently released book "Let the good times roll" is a great read, with nice big print for tired eyes! We hope to get there again this summer for Sunday lunch (always excellent) and a polo match. We just drive up to the touch line and put out the chairs, and my wife can put her legs up as she wishes. |

From: Jos Ah. now I understand about watching the tennis - in the circumstances I, too, would have suffered it gladly. The only sport I very occasionally watch is dressage - horses dancing - though I couldn't care less who wins. When they do it to music, often it is just horses dancing and some indifferent music that happens to be going on at the same time, but sometimes the horse really does move in time to the music, and then it seems quite magical. |

I tried horse riding and fell off and broke my shoulder at my first outing. I had similar accident whilst ice skating. I played in several sports too. Football; Rugby mainly Union but did play League as well. In the summer Cricket was my game. I also played Basketball while I was in the Air Force. I was also a good smimmer but not competitively I swam across Lake Windemere at it's widest point. It was for charity and we were all covered by marshalls in canoes. Brrrrrrr !! very cold. Tried cycling but saddle soreness was a roblem. Regards Mike |

I lived, ate and slept horses. When not in school I wore my trusty pair of very smelly jodhpurs and a yellow polo-neck jumper with a horse's head knitted into the front (knitted it myself) My local riding school entered me in many gymkhanas, on my favourite horse called...er...Nigger. (Oh dear... very un-PC nowadays!) I went ice-skating a lot when I lived in Edinburgh (Murrayfield ice rink) I was so thin that when I played left inner for the hockey team I could dart in amongst the big beefy girls almost unseen. As for swimming, I was quite good at that too. But I weighed only 7 stone for years, and had long thick hair almost down to my knees. I think being skinny makes one quite nippy and agile. My parents were very disappointed that I loathed tennis. :) |

It isn't a word I'd use (except to explain why it shouldn't be used), but Guy Gibson VC, of Dambusters fame, had a dog called Nigger. I doubt he meant anything by it. There are only two words in English I'd call 'beyond the pale'. The other is the c-word, despite its honourable antecedents (the same 'cun' as in 'cunning' & 'cyning', the A/S root of 'king' & all the Germanic language variants thereof). You can get away with pretty much anything else, but the c & the n... Use 'em very sparingly & very carefully! ;-) |

At least, unlike the offside rule, one can get to understand tennis scoring without lengthy sleep-inducing explanations and demonstrations. On cricket, the Monty Python 'live' clip with 'action replay' said it all for me. In neither the live clip nor the action replay did the batsman move even a fraction of an inch. |

As for most boring games: definitely not tennis: cricket or golf for me. My dad played cricket, and as kids, we got dragged off to the most god-forsaken old country cricket pitches in the land every weekend: put me off for life!
