Hi,

Roy Bailey's Song of the Leaders I believe uses the same melody as Steeleye Span's King Henry. I was wondering what the origin of this melody is?, thanks.

I was wondering where this melody come from?

Span used it a long time before Roy Bailey, presumably as Roy is using it they didn't write it or have any copywrite of it. So where did they both get it from. Another song, classical music?

The melody of King Henry is printed in Bronson's The Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads. Bronson gives as his source the Ritson-Tyler-Brown Manuscript, pp. 85-90, Harvard College Library, and it was collected from Mrs. Brown of Falkland, Aberdeenshire.

Roy Bailey's version of Brian Pearson's Song of the Leaders is on his 1982 album Hard Times, and he was accompanied on this track by John Kirkpatrick. Now, John was with Steeleye Span in 1977, and so he might have known King Henry from them and given the melody to Roy Bailey. But that's pure guessing, and I don't know when Brian Pearson wrote Song of the Leaders and if he already used this meloody or if it was added by Roy.

Hui,

just checked a copy of Bronson's and the one you mention appears to be a completely different melody to the one used by Span and Bailey.

The one in Bronson is this one

As far as I know the tune belongs to a song called 'When I was a Little Boy', which I seem to remember was in the original Penguin BEFS. It's late and I don't have time to check.
