It is a fine festival in an idyllic town away from the hustle and bustle!

I will again be running the Fred Jordan unaccompanied song competition** (now open to the first 15 entrants I receive ~ time constraints on numbers~) winner a Fred to keep and £50 minimum ~ see the Saltburn folk festival website c/o The Cutty Wren folk club!

As well as all the guests and other treats!

Ray

Thanks Sandman 4 yr Second post! Almost there . . . Saltburn is a small Victorian Town in England on the east coast just a few miles north of Whitby
The festival is small but great !! It kicks off on THURSDAY at the Marine Hotel right on the front (opp. Pier) in the eve with a pre-fest folk club and almost everyone at the fest will be there (approx 70 last year) Unforch they make a charge of £3 - bit of a cheek! But a great eve nonetheless. I shall (for my sins as punishment) be at most of the freebies of which there are many, folk club, competitions (see Ray above) Concert Hall show (great!) Etc etc. Will be parking up opp Marine 2nite - oh and the best thing about Saltburn is that the parking is FREE (except in certain restricted areas but all along prom is free and most of town too!! - not gonna be at Whitby this year b'cos of their stupid and obsessed parking prohibitions).
see you all there - have a great weekend !!!!!

Oh just thought - the web site is just "Saltburnfolkfestival.com" (dont know how 2 do a clicky) and there is a full programme on there, which you can download very easily if u have a smartfone - all events, when, where and with prices. Whitby organizers could learn (or re-learn?) From this small simple festival.

If you are a folkie and have booked the wrong week for Whitby Folk Week - it does happen - then a run up to Saltburn will enable you to get away from the Regatta.

John has done great job for many years and always puts on a diverse programme of events.

Strangely we have not visited since we retired but that is all to do with the mystery of how we found the time to go to work!

Just back from first time at Saltburn, had a brilliant time, great concerts, everything easy to walk to, really friendly people, smashing stewards and lots of free (donations in a tin) events. Highlight was a Music Hall/Variety do this afternoon, great singers, lots of banter and laughs and a superb musical interlude with a concertina and zither type instrument.
Congratulations to the organisers and all the artists, will be back next year.

I suspect it will always clash with Sidmouth.
I would have gone in the Redcar days, in my red car - but circumstances............

Certainly enjoyed our first visit - interesting to hear the senior "godfather" of the Lakeman clan and by contrast the younger generation of the Sands family.

Tom McConville just gets better with age.

Doesn't always clash with Sidmouth. Sometimes a week in between but giving priority to Mummers Team at Saltburn I have often missed Sidmouth altogether rather than come back early (and so sadly have missed the recent years in the York and Faulk run by Dave and Julia).

To Guest Folk
that "zither-like instrument" was an Auto Harp.
Yes I always enjoy the Music Hall with Trevor Taylor (the MC) and Ray Storr (the big guy out of the trio that sang. He is great solo.
If this was your first time there then you may not know Bert Draycott (World Champion Spoons Player) who used to be a big part of the Concert Hall spot but sadly he died in late September lasy year. Go utube him he was GREAT !!

The Fred Jordan competition for unaccompanied singers was won by Bruce Gomersall well known in Oxfordshire I believe ~ he won £250 and the Trophy (sculptured by Graham Ibbeson of Barnsley)

We (Baldrick's Plan) had a terrific time at Saltburn Folk Festival, right from the word go! Really well organised and extremely warm and friendly, it was a treat to meet old friends, fellow performers and attendees alike, and to make many new ones. Thank you to John, Paul and all the organisers and assistants.

Thanks jojofolkagogo, sorry for delay replying , Internet thingy stopped working. Have looked Bert Draycot up, amazing man, sorry I never got to see and hear him in real life and thank you for identifying the autoharp. Had no idea what it's proper name was or what a wonderful sound it could make before seeing it at a the music hall do.
