WHY DID I KISS THAT GIRL?
Words, Lew Brown; music, Robert A. King & Ray Henderson; ©1924.

I. Lyrics from the sheet music at Baylor University:

VERSE 1. Bashful Johnny Green just turned seventeen, wore his first long pants.
And some friends he knew introduced him to Mabel at a dance.
She was awf'ly nice, so he kissed her twice; then he ran away.
One week later all the boys heard bashful Johnny say:

CHORUS: Oh, why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?
Why did I kiss that girl? I could almost cry.
I'm nervous, so nervous; I'm worried and blue;
And if her kiss did that, what would her huggin' do?
Ma says that I'm a wreck; I'll admit she's right.
Pa says he'll break my neck; he can't sleep at night.
They're upset and all becuz I ain't like I used to wuz.
Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?

VERSE 2. Joe and Jack and Jim all kept after him almost ev'ry day
"Get her on the phone. Ask if she's alone. You'll win her that way."
Johnny fell again; he kissed her and then ran away once more.
When he met the gang next day, then he began to roar: CHORUS

II. Lyrics as recorded by Ella Shields, date unknown. Can be found on the album "Tipping the Velvet" (2002), which I heard on Spotify:

VERSE 1: Perhaps you've never seen bashful seventeen in his first long pants.
Some dear friend he knew introduced him to Mabel at a dance.
She was very nice, so he kissed her twice, then he ran away.
In the morning all his comrades might have heard him say:

CHORUS 1: "Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?
Why did I kiss that girl? I could almost cry.
I'm nervous, so nervous; I'm worried and blue,
And if a kiss does that, what will her huggin' do?
Ma says I am a wreck; I admit she's right.
Pa says he'll break my neck; he can't sleep at night.
They're upset and all because I'm not like I used to was.
Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?

CHORUS 2: "Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?
Why did I kiss that girl? I could almost cry.
My collar, my necktie, I ripped them in two.
I beat myself so much I'm almost black and blue.
I caught an awful cold walking in my sleep.
I'm young but I look old; I could almost weep.
I was fat but now I'm thin. What an awful mess I'm in!
Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?"

VERSE 1: Bashful Johnny said: "My old silly head keeps going round and round.
Can't stop stuttering; my heart's fluttering since that girl I found.
Last night in the square, I met Mabel there, kissed her lips once more,
Ran off home to try and sleep but all I did was roar:

CHORUS 3: "Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?
Why did I kiss that girl? I could almost cry.
On whiskey, I'm frisky; on Guinness, I'm mad;
And it's the worst attack that I have ever had.
I'm nearly off my head; you should hear me scream.
All night I lay in bed, dreaming awful dreams.
Talk about love's old sweet song; that's all right but I'm all wrong.
Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?

CHORUS 4: "Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?
Why did I kiss that girl? I could almost cry.
I'm peevish and thievish like people with flu,
And if a kiss does that, what will her huggin' do?
I'm nearly off my head; you should hear me scream.
All night I lay in bed, dreaming awful dreams.
Full of love and full of pep, I woke up on her front-door step.
Why did I kiss that girl? Why, oh, why, oh, why?

CHORUS 5: "Why did I kiss that girl? Ooh-la-la, oui, oui!
She set my brain awhirl, made a fuss of me.
When(?) she was Frenchy and me Frenchy too,
And when two Frenchies meet, c'est bon, comprenez-vous?
She whispered: 'Qu'est-ce que c'est? Oui, comme-ci comme-ça.'
She said: 'Run away; here comes my papá.'
I ran fast and he ran too; in ze back I'm black and blue.
Why did I kiss that girl? Ooh-la-la, oui, oui!"
