30 Aug 18 - 03:02 AM (#3947020) Subject: help with chords please From: GUEST,FloraG A music group I'm in is thinking of playing a bit of jazz ( foreign territory to us). The music has C, B and D as C (sharp))0 7 D ( sharp) 0 7. B 0 The 0 is printed small. We're ok with the sharps and the 7's. but what does the 0 mean, and how would it be played on a guitar and a ukulele, please? |

30 Aug 18 - 03:45 AM (#3947027) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,Jerry It’s shorthand for diminished seventh chords, typically used as passing chords whilst moving from one major to another, eg. C to D. C#dim7 would contain the notes of C#, E, G and B D#dim7 - D#, F#, A and C# Bdim7 = B, D#, G# and C. On the top four strings of guitar, you could fret C#dim7 as 2423 (low to high), with D# two frets up and B one fret lower. The same fingering could be used on ukelele but at other frets depending on the pitch tuning of the instrument. |

30 Aug 18 - 04:17 AM (#3947037) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,FloraG Thanks. So the 0 in the printed edition of the chord is short for diminished. I can look these chords up now. Thanks for the link. I tend to play the tune - so chords are a bit of an unknown to me - but I think jazz needs its chords. We thought we would try ' aint misbehavin' in c but we may be biting off more than we can chew. Thanks again. |
30 Aug 18 - 04:33 AM (#3947039) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,Jerry Notes for the chords I listed should actually be: C#, E, G and A# D#, F#, A and C B, D, F and G#. Unusually, the chord fingering shape repeats the same notes in a different order every three frets up the neck. |
30 Aug 18 - 05:26 AM (#3947053) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,Sol Additional info. The three fret repeat pattern is the same for augmented chords. They are denoted with a "plus"' sign after the chord i.e. C+ = C augmented. (C, E, G#, C) For guitar players... (thinnest string first) E, C, G#, E. Note: The two thickest strings are not played. |
30 Aug 18 - 05:31 AM (#3947054) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,Sol To add to my post above. For C+ the fingering would be "open-1-1-2" For D+ it would be "2-3-3-4" ...and so on. |
30 Aug 18 - 07:09 AM (#3947064) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,Pseudonymous The other thing with diminished chords is that (for reasons I won't go into, and *putting it simply*) each one is actually four different diminished chords, and can be called by the name of any of the notes contained in it. Of course, for any one playing position/shape only one of the chords will have the root note as the lowest. So for example B D F Ab Is B dim7, and also 'inversions' of D dim7 F dim 7 Ab dim 7 |
31 Aug 18 - 04:53 AM (#3947244) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,FloraG Thanks so far. I tend to play the tune note ( I'm quite good at picking out tunes from music or ear)) as the top note and try to put a chord note in below - I can often only manage one. ( mandolin/fiddle/Uke) If I play G as the tune note ( ain't mis BEHAVEN ) I could reach a C sharp or an E on the uke. Is one better than the other to make it more authentic jazz? Sorry to ask such basic questions but I am way out of my comfort zone. FloraG |
01 Sep 18 - 08:07 AM (#3947449) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,Jerry Jazz ain’t my forte either, but if you are trying to emulate a diminished chord with double stopping then just two notes in isolation might sound too discordant, unless others are playing the whole chord in accompaniment. The other non-melody note that you go for would probably be the one best implying the transition in the chord line, eg. c# since the chords before after are C and Dm. |
01 Sep 18 - 08:49 AM (#3947456) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: doc.tom The repeat pattern for diminished chords every 3 frets is correct (because they are a sequence of minor thirds), I think you'll find that augmented chords repeat every fourth fret - not every third fret as Guest Sol suggests (because they are a sequence of major thirds). |
01 Sep 18 - 08:58 AM (#3947458) Subject: RE: help with chords please From: GUEST,Jerry Sorry, the chords either side of your C#dim in the refrain are C and G7, but c# would still provide a run up from the c of the C chord to the d of the G7 chord. |
