I've not managed to get there for a few years myself, but from memory... Pub sessions are rowdy and/or non-singer-friendly (by which I mean not "our" kind of singer, Noreen). And the venues are distinctly unconducive to sing in, poor acoustics, unsuitable layouts etc. Any official programmed singarounds (or the equivalent), if there are any, tend to be peppered with or taken over by guest artists and "jobs for the boys" spots - which these days is sadly the norm at festivals. Result: the visiting singer gets a raw deal and very few chances to sing. Sad, because Otley's such a nice friendly little town. Slight thread creep - I might recommend the monthly singers' session Just Voices (see separate thread)... but the next one's not until 25th... |
