We shared....Now you have this wonderful site to learn Personal question:wondering how strange I am:who out there actually goes into an altered state by listening or performing? |

Quite rare with folk unless you are talking something along the lines of Steeleye's 'Tam Lin'. Not as often as when I was younger but even now if something grabs me I can be in a different place in no time. Bit of a shock when you have to come back down to earth though :-) |

From: C-flat I don't play nearly as much as I used to and so when I've got to get "gig ready" I need to spend some concentrated time with the guitar until it starts to "come to me". During this intense playing period I can experience an almost trance-like state where I start to "see" (more like sense?) colours and shapes that "fit" with the music. It happened a lot when I was young but I played all the time then and didn't think anything of it. It was only when I got older and played less that I realised that it wasn't happening all the time. In this state I can completely lose track of time and place. I rather enjoy it, almost meditative... C-flat |

I do not play the hours per day anymore either. I had really only been exposed to acoustic when I ended up spending each night in a club in the Village,going with a friend who played 2 sets per night. Suddenly I was in the front row a couple hours each night for Paul Butterfield blues band. OMG I went into outer space....So nice to know there are others who experience this. Thanks. |

It can be achieved through music, painting, dance or what you are good at. Time does not exist there. Internal colors or scenes will be created. Healing may even occur. I learned this first from the transformative power of music for Americans Leonard Bernstein can explain the altered state that music causes. But best of all just do it. |

Having said that,I guess certain lyrics, at certain moments in your life, could make a person very emotional. |

And actor Windsor Davies remarked on his favourite roll "You fall in love with the role you are currently in". You can see it in singers who have learned a "new" song. The danger is : does the audience share the love? But it won't stop US falling - now will it? PS it's the oxytocin IMNSHO. |

I well remember in the sixties sobbing into my Edinburgh University scarf while hearing for the first time 'Will Ye Go Lassie Go?' It was at the Edinburgh Folk Club, and I cried so much my scarf was soaking wet when the chap finished singing. And I can't listen to 'Báidin Fheilimí' (Felimi's Boat) without getting tearful. It seems so sad.' to me when I was very small, and when she got to 'She died of a fever and no-one could save her...' I was bawling my little head off. To cheer myself up I often play Fat Les's 'Vindaloo' on Youtube. Love that song and the video that goes with it. |

This reportedly feels like time slows down and you cannot go wrong. Bands like the Grateful Dead (wait, there are no bands like the Grateful Dead) purposely engaged in collective improvisation to get to a state where the individual player is subsumed in the group mind, and the collective experience is shared by the audience. I've occasionally experienced this state while playing music with others. It really is quite a high. |
