What I hope to sing tonight

From: Haruo

Here are the songs I'm proposing for tonight's Seattle Song Circle:

Swim Around, Little Fishes
Tune: I Ride an Old Paint

I make-a the bucks, I pack-a the fish,
I lay them out head to toe, flat as you wish.
I take to the market, I pack them in ice,
Oh, little fishes, now don't you look nice.

Refrain:
Swim around, little fishes, and around, and around,
And the country we live in is called Puget Sound.

I come from the Old World, I fish the sardine,
They call me a wop here, now what does that mean?
I work with the Chinaman, Muslim and Greek,
All color they come in, all language they speak.
Swim around...

My brother Domingo, he work on the docks,
He paint the picture that go on the box.
The fish, they so happy, they jump in the air.
Watch out, little fishes, I catch-a you there.
Swim around...

I tell-a my son's, you go to the sea,
You be the captain, not fish tack like me.
I sitten them down and many times told,
The sea is the silver, the fish is the gold.
Swim around...
Swim around...

He Will Be My Sunshine

I meet him in the smokehouse, where the smoke curls to the sky,
And the sparks from sawdust burning green sting into my eye.
He’s golden in the the sunset, and the breaking of the day,
Chopping fallen cedar as his work gets underway.

When the fish are running, and he has a lot to spare,
He cuts them down the middle, and hangs them in the air.
Like his father did in Norway, and his father did before,
And the Indians who flourished her upon this very shore.

Some fish will be kippered, and some fish will be canned,
But the salmon in the smokehouse is the joy of Ole’s hand.
He knows just when to turn them, and to cut them thin or thick;
And the oilier the better, says my Ole, that’s the trick.

My father said, dear daughter, it is my fondest wish,
You marry no Norwegian, they always smell of fish.
But it make me heart to yumpin’ when he walks in through the door;
If he smells of kippered salmon, then I love him all the more.

Some men shine like diamonds, and some men shine like gold.
Ole Olsen shines like sunlight, he’s mine to have and hold.
With the salmon in the smokehouse by Stella’s bright cascade,
He will be my sunshine, and I will be his shade.

Rosin the Beau

I've traveled all over this world And now to another I go
And I know that good quarters are waiting
To welcome old Rosin the Beau /x3/
And I know that good quarters are waiting To welcome old Rosin the Beau.

When I'm dead and laid out on the counter A voice you will hear from below
Saying "Send down a hogshead of whiskey
To drink with old Rosin the Beau" /x3/
Saying "Send down a hogshead of whiskey To drink with old Rosin the Beau"

Then get a half dozen stout fellows And stack them all up in a row
Let them drink out of half gallon bottles
To the memory of Rosin the Beau /x3/
Let them drink out of half gallon bottles To the memory of Rosin the Beau

Then get this half dozen stout fellows And let them all stagger and go
And dig a great hole in the meadow
And in it put Rosin the Beau /x3/
And dig a great hole in the meadow And in it put Rosin the Beau

Then get ye a couple of bottles Put one at me head and me toe
With a diamond ring scratch upon them
The name of old Rosin the Beau /x3/
With a diamond ring scratch upon them The name of old Rosin the Beau

I've only this one consolation As out of this world I go
I know that the next generation
Will resemble old Rosin the Beau /x3/
I know that the next generation Will resemble old Rosin the Beau

I fear that old tyrant approaching That cruel remorseless old foe
And I lift up me glass in his honor
Take a drink with old Rosin the Beau /x3/
And I lift up me glass in his honor Take a drink with old Rosin the Beau

Sub Signo de la Verda Kat’

Sub signo de la Verda Kat’, Verda Kat’, Jen sidas tie la amat’, la amat’,
Kaj gaje trinkas glason da vin’, Kaj tute ne pripensas min.

Do, adiau, kamaradoj, Restu vi sen lamentado,
Car disigi fine devas ciu amikar'.
Adiau, geamikoj, nun iras mi. Ne plu mi restos tie ci, tie ci,
La harpon mi pendigos sur salik', Kaj bono sekvu vin, amik'!

Brunharulino logis lin, logis lin, Por ami sin li lasis min, lasis min,
Kaj li, fidela, iam al mi Karese ludas nun kun si.

Sur stono super mia tomb', mia tomb',
Gravuru bildon de kolomb', de kolomb',
Kaj al la homoj montros gi Ke pro la amo mortis mi.

The Laird is my Shepherd

The Laird is my Shepherd, in nocht am I wantin';
In the haugh's green girse does He mak me lie doon
While mony puir straiglers are bleatin' and pantin'
By saft-flowin' burnies He leads me at noon.

When aince I had strayed far awa in the bracken,
And daidled till gloamin' cam ower a' the hills,
Nae dribble o' water my sair drooth to slacken,
And dark grow'd the nicht wi' its haars and its chills.

Awa frae the fauld, strayin' fit-sair and weary,
I thocht I had naethin' tae dae but tae dee.
He socht me and fand me in mountain hechts dreary,
He gangs by fell paths which He kens best for me.

And noo, for His name's sake, I'm dune wi' a' fearin'
Though cloods may aft gaither and soughin' win's blaw.
"Hoo this?" or "Hoo that?" -- oh, prevent me frae spearin'
His will is aye best, and I daurna say "Na".

The valley o' death winna fleg me to thread it,
Through awfu' the darkness, I weel can foresee.
Wi' His rod and His staff He wull help me to tread it,
Then wull its shadows, sae gruesome, a' flee.

Forfochen in presence o' foes that surround me,
My Shepherd a table wi' denties has spread.
The Thyme and the Myrtle blaw fragrant aroond me,
He brims a fu' cup and poors oil on my head.

Surely guidness an' mercy, despite a' my roamin'
Wull gang wi' me doon tae the brink o' the river.
Ayont it nae mair o' the eerie an' gloamin'
I wull bide in the Hame o' my Faither for ever.

Wish my Lallans brogue was truer.

Maybe I'll sing it "Lord" like it should be, but I like "Laird" as an allusion to the well-known hymn Saviour, visit Thy plantation.

Pretty well. Didn't do the Psalm, but I sang/led "Swim Around, Little Fishes", about which the consensus was it's by Mary Garvey the first time around, then "Sub signo de la Verda Kat'" (with just about everybody singing along even though I'm the only one who knows the language) the second time around, then the third time around a visitor from Ithaca, New York, sang "Rosin the Beau" off my sheet, and I followed it with "He Will Be My Sunshine", and then the fourth time around, as a parting song (as I had to leave about half an hour early) I sang the Tom Lehrer World War III ballad "So Long, Mom". There were about a dozen in attendance (4 of them out of town visitors), so my guess is there were close to 40 songs sung by the time I left, and there was still a half hour to go, so they may have hit 50. Lot's of fun stuff. Only a couple of "Pass"-es.

don't see my post from last night. Yes, I did do Little Fishes..I think it has another name but it doesn't matter. I also did the smokehouse one from Stella, which is very near to where I grew up in Washington. I am honored that you sang them...
