Lyr Req: Help please, what is the song?

I am trying to get the title of a song that has been in my head all day. It was played on the radio in October and November 1976.

It was about a father reflecting upon himself and his lack of understanding towards his young son.
It was a monologue type song similar to desiderata, not sung.

The only lines I recall from it are

“You were playing with your friends and ruining the garden and I shouted at you, I knew I had humiliated you.
Tonight, while I was watching television you came into the room, why aren’t you in bed yet., you said I only came to say goodnight daddy.
Tonight, while you were sleeping I came into your room and thought what is happening to me, you are coming to me with love, from now on I am going to be the father I should be

My child, my little boy.

Thanks in anticipation.

Ohhh, sympathy! Drives me crazy when that happens!

The only possible song I can think of is Harry Chapin's Cats in the Cradle, but presumably it's not that.

Thanks, Thompson, no it's not Harry, love that song too. This one didn't make it big, I used to have it on cassette, a radio recording.

Thompson, The guy (singer/talker) spoke with an English accent, quite polite. I remember David Hamilton used to play it a lot on his afternoon show on Radio One.

David Hamilton seems to be working with BBC Radio Sussex now, if it's the same person - "Diddy David Hamilton" - maybe it's worth sending in a query to him? This is David Hamilton's website. He has an email address for himself and one for his agent there.

I received a reply from David. Unfortunately, he can't recall the song title or artist. A very pleasant email reply all the same. My search goes on!

Thanks for letting us know. If you do find out, please come back and tell us the answer.

I tried Googling a lot of the phrases from the words you gave us but could find nothing.

I am not only very pleased to announce I finally found the artist and song title that has eluded me for over forty years, but I can also now share it with you as it is on Youtube.

I contacted David Hamilton but he was unable to help as he could not recall it. I contacted a lady I once worked with (who is now in her eightieth year) who also liked it.

Fortunately, she remembered the title.

Again thanks to all for your assistance and interest.

Please listen and enjoy.
