Good Old Boys (John Hartford)

03 Nov 18 - 01:43 PM (#3959893)
Subject: Good Old Boys (John Hartford)
From: GUEST,David Usher

The lyrics to this sweet John Hartford tune were nowhere on the Net. It is the first Hartford tune lost to digital time that I have found. It was the title tune for his 1999 "John Hartford" album recorded near the end of his life. The band members Bob Carlin, Mike Compton, Chris Sharp, larry Perkins, and Mark Schatz toured with him to the end of his battle with cancer and saw John off the planet.

John wrote some really great retrospective tunes during this time period including I Wish We Had Our Time Again and recorded the best version of Big Rock Candy Mountain that I know of. the Hamilton Ironworks album was a personalized history of old time music with tributes to everyone he ever learned a tune from.

This tune was also covered on "Old and In the Gray" by the surviving members of the Old and In the Way group.

Good Old Boys
John Hartford
Key of A

Now here’s to all them good old boys
Cheer ‘em on, make a lot of noise
This would be sad old world without a lot of good old boys
This would be sad old world without a lot of good old boys

Chorus:
So here’s to all them good old boys
Cheer ‘em on, make a lot of noise
This would be sad old world without a lot of good old boys
This would be sad old world without a lot of good old boys

Good old boy is a good old boy
Old buddy’s there when you need a an old boy
He’ll be right there, been through a lot
Make work as a pretty fair good old boy

This would be a sad old place and a sad old world
And pretty bad place for a boy and a girl
And a boy and his dog and his old paint horse
Of course gotta gather round and make a lot of noise for a good old boy.

Now boys I’m here now to say we along like a good boy
They can actually do it
and I’m here to tell you they is pretty fine
And a pretty fair good old boy

Repeat first verse
