ONE ROUGH LIFE; Ted Ashlaw: Adirondack Lumber Camp and Barroom Singer (2018), a U.S. release, is available for order @ www.tauny.org/shop and $21.95 US. Ballads and songs found previously on the Ted Ashlaw LP (Philo 1022, 1976) are here doubled, with text transcriptions for each, and tunes as transcribed and with general remarks by eminent musicologist Norman Cazden. I provide concise commentary annotations for each of the unaccompanied renditions. The 160 pp. book is the first ethnographic and musicological book devoted to a northern New York State traditional singer, born in a lumber camp and esteemed for his lumber woods and barroom singing betwwen WWI and WWII. |
