Heard about it this morning. It was the most awful shock - we knew him, and had only talked to him last May at a conference at University of Limerick. It appears that he'd been ill for some time, but it sounds like people weren't aware of it. (Wow, he suuuuuuurrrrreee still had his piano chops.)

He's justly famous for his fantastic contributions to performing, teaching, and writing/composing, but he also completed Donal O'Sullivan's unfinished book analysing the original manuscripts of the tunes in Volume III of the Bunting Collection.

Everyone here is devastated, and all day the tributes have flooded in, including from the President of Ireland. (Oh WHY do the scoundrels of the earth flourish and do widespread harm, while wonderful souls like Mícheál are taken from us far too soon??????)

Below are some more links - please excuse the copy-paste, but the thought of trying to do four blue clickies makes me lose the will to live.

Rest in peace, Mícheál. In the words of James Taylor, "I always thought I'd see you again."

I've had a lot of pleasure from his concerts and CDs.

Thank you, Micheal.
