Review: David Attenborough field recordings

22 Nov 18 - 08:07 PM (#3962822)
Subject: David Attenborough field recordings
From: Hagman

Released on http://www.wrasserecords.com/

From the blurb:

This 2CD set is a compilation of original field recordings made by David Attenborough between 1954 and 1963. He travelled to remote parts of the world to find and film exotic animals for the BBC television series Zoo Quest. But he was just as interested in the people he met and their music. Whenever he came across musicians, out came his early portable tape machine. “While I was theoretically looking for pythons, in the evenings I would record different types of music… ” The recordings have been in the BBC’s Sound Archive ever since and this is the first time they’ve been made available on CD. This collection features more than 50 recordings of traditional music from Sierra Leone, Paraguay, Madagascar, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Pacific Islands and northern Australia. The accompanying 52-page booklet draws on David Attenborough’s experiences with stunning original photographs of the musicians and recordings. Presented by Songlines magazines and compiled & edited by Julian May.

I am surprised that nobody has commented on this. David Attenborough was once responsible for getting Harry Cox into a television studio. Don't know if this recording was preserved, though. Anyway, thank you for the info. I have ordered a set.

I must admit that I am shamefully ignorant about Folk Music outside these Islands of ours. Bert Lloyds writing and documentaries helped. Ewan McColl's comparisons on the first programme of the Song Carriers fired my interest, I did buy (and lend out God forgive me) Bert's Topic recordings made in Yugoslavia (that gets confusing nowadays. I assume Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, that's what you get for lending them!)
The truth of the matter is it is easier to stay in the British comfort zone than join the world connection that becomes more and more apparent everyday I look at folk Song tunes in say 'Hammond' and find Irish, Scottish then Eastern European tune families. I think you need to have a mind with a world view that is more than a little wider than mine to absorb all that info. It does not mean I'm not interested but if somebody (Mike??) were to post an informed review of Attenborough's recordings here on Mudcat, it would be much appreciated.
