House alleged that he was middle-aged during World War I and that he was 79 in 1965, which would make his date of birth around 1886. However, all legal records give his date of birth as March 21, 1902" Well, a lot of that makes no sense. If Son had been born around 1886, like he claimed, he would not have been middle-aged at the time of World War One - which he also claimed ( unless he considered 30 to be middle-aged). |

During the conversation Willie turned to Slim and said "We know all them other blues men are liars, but sometimes I have my doubts about you!" Being constantly asked questions about events that happened long in the past and which were often of no interest to them personally, is it any wonder? I am sure that some of them really enjoyed winding up their inquisitors. |

A blues musician who was 15 years old in 1905, e.g. (such as Jelly Roll Morton, who played blues), is generally more relevant to understanding blues music of about 1905 than a blues musician who was 3 years old in 1905. |

Choice of notes, rhythmic approach etc. Take blues/boogie piano players. It's possible to guess the age of early pianists - from their recording - by how much "ragtime" was evident in their playing. |

I suspect the point of this post was to suggest that he was not the great original as he is portrayed. (The man who taught Robert Johnson etc.) However having sat about 8 feet away from him when he played the blues twice, it was like sparks from heaven, and it really does not matter where he stood timewise for me. |

He learned blues from e.g. Mamie Desdunes, who died about 14 years before Son began playing guitar.
