09 Dec 18 - 05:39 AM (#3965572) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Henry Piper (of Ottery) Sorry, ….I don't understand this post !! what is the point of publishing a list of names of people who are or where older than someone else ??? |
09 Dec 18 - 05:54 AM (#3965575) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: michaelr Let's see a list of blues musicians younger than House! ;-) |
09 Dec 18 - 10:19 AM (#3965599) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Hootenanny I believe the OP got the idea from Gilbert and Sullivan. |
09 Dec 18 - 10:25 AM (#3965600) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Tunesmith Talking about Son's age, I remember some years ago, a writer claimed that Son lied about his age - to get employment - and that he was probably A LOT older than he claimed to be. |
09 Dec 18 - 12:08 PM (#3965618) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Tunesmith The following is from Son's Wkipedia entry: "His date of birth is a matter of some debate. House alleged that he was middle-aged during World War I and that he was 79 in 1965, which would make his date of birth around 1886. However, all legal records give his date of birth as March 21, 1902" Well, a lot of that makes no sense. If Son had been born around 1886, like he claimed, he would not have been middle-aged at the time of World War One - which he also claimed ( unless he considered 30 to be middle-aged). |
09 Dec 18 - 02:48 PM (#3965649) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Joseph Scott "what is the point" It's for people who are interested in early blues music. |
09 Dec 18 - 02:54 PM (#3965651) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Joseph Scott When Son lied about how old he was, he was lying. Son's father was born in about 1877. Daniel Beaumont's book about House is good; Wikipedia is unreliable. |
12 Dec 18 - 10:38 AM (#3965910) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Mike Yates "When son lied about how old he was, he was lying"? If I remember my old logic tutor correctly, two negatives make a positive. So does the above statement mean that Son was actually telling the truth? |
12 Dec 18 - 11:41 AM (#3965929) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Hootenanny I recall one time when I and a couple of colleagues were in conversation on a social occasion with Willie Dixon and Memphis Slim. During the conversation Willie turned to Slim and said "We know all them other blues men are liars, but sometimes I have my doubts about you!" Being constantly asked questions about events that happened long in the past and which were often of no interest to them personally, is it any wonder? I am sure that some of them really enjoyed winding up their inquisitors. |
12 Dec 18 - 02:31 PM (#3965933) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Modette What a silly thread! Some musicians would always be ten years older and some would always be ten years younger. I can't imagine how this list would be any use to anybody other than anal retentives. |
12 Dec 18 - 02:39 PM (#3965934) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Henry Piper (of Ottery) Absolutely agree with you Modette, this is a Totally pointless post, as I mentioned earlier. Joseph Scott I am interested in early Blues music, but I still cant see what this post is supposed to prove Si what if some people where older than Son house, quite a lot where younger but so what ??? |
12 Dec 18 - 02:41 PM (#3965935) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Henry Piper (of Ottery) While where on the subject I would have thought Both Bunk Johnson and Jelly roll Morton where Jazz musicians rather than blues musicians, as well as several others on yourlist. |
12 Dec 18 - 03:07 PM (#3965941) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Joseph Scott Blues music existed in the 1890s. A blues musician who was 15 years old in 1905, e.g. (such as Jelly Roll Morton, who played blues), is generally more relevant to understanding blues music of about 1905 than a blues musician who was 3 years old in 1905. |
14 Dec 18 - 05:09 AM (#3966211) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Tunesmith Well, the age of a blues musician can be reflected in their playing. Choice of notes, rhythmic approach etc. Take blues/boogie piano players. It's possible to guess the age of early pianists - from their recording - by how much "ragtime" was evident in their playing. |
14 Dec 18 - 01:37 PM (#3966282) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Joseph Scott Sid Harris is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdLeWdkv_b8 The other keyboardists in the above list are Amacker, Berringer, Burton, Callens, Church, Duerson, Ledbetter a little, Mack, Manetta, May, Morton, Nickerson, Porter, Roberts, George W. Thomas, Washington, and Wilson. |
15 Dec 18 - 05:07 AM (#3966355) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Nick Dow I saw Son House play live twice at the 100 club in London. I suspect the point of this post was to suggest that he was not the great original as he is portrayed. (The man who taught Robert Johnson etc.) However having sat about 8 feet away from him when he played the blues twice, it was like sparks from heaven, and it really does not matter where he stood timewise for me. |
15 Dec 18 - 12:24 PM (#3966400) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Tunesmith I don't think anybody would say that listening to Jelly Roll would give us a greater insight into the blues than listening to Son House. |
16 Dec 18 - 02:49 AM (#3966510) Subject: RE: Blues musicians 10 yrs older than House From: GUEST,Joseph Scott Into early blues, certainly. He learned blues from e.g. Mamie Desdunes, who died about 14 years before Son began playing guitar. "great original" "where he stood timewise" How great Buddy Guy e.g. is and whether we can learn about early blues from him have nothing to with each other. |
