Tech: Things we hate about our guitars !!!???

Let's get it off our chests in this thread...

Me - I hate Tune-o-matic bridges,
and by extension any other that doen't allow individual string height adjustment...

The G string is driving me nuts buzzing and choking
on the guitar I'm trying to set up right now;
because the saddle slot is too deep compared to the other strings.

..and also trad telecaster bridges with two strings sharing one saddle..
bastards to intonate...

But at least now though, we can buy relatively affordable compensating saddles to mostly eliminate that problem.

But Tune-o-matics continue to plague humanity...

No I've got millions of guitars. I love them all.
I wish I'd married a guitar. As long as it didn't have one of those bloody bridges like the Rickenbacker 330 where you have to sellotape the strings to the bridge, every time you want to change the strings.

Beautiful guitar. It sounded great - whatever the amp.

I used to say you could plug it into a bowl of custard - it would still sound great.

I'm only sorry I was playing for drunken arseholes in those days.

The thing I hate about my guitar is I no longer own it. I fell on hard times and had to sell it to a nice man who told me he would look after it, If he doesn't I shall return from the grave to haunt him. It was an Armstrong, drool, dribble sob! I should have sold the wife!

There is not a single thing I hate about my Kinkade, it is an absolute joy every time I pick it up.

Kinkade - rings a bell..

i only recently started watching this video

Dan & Mick's Guitars Get A Refret

"The work was done by Jonny Kinkead from http://www.kinkadeguitars.co.uk

Jonny has been building and repairing guitars for over 40 years and we are both proud and privileged to be able to document him at work, pouring all that immense skill and experience into our beloved guitars.

Massive thanks to Jonny for letting us into his world, and now probably causing his phone to be even busier than it was already.

I occasionally try again with them. Recently bought another one - an IKEA half size, £3 from a charity shop. It actually sounds pretty good. But I have no interest in chordal playing so I'm going to keep it tuned EADGCF, like an F oud.

The annoying thing is the frets. I suppose there has to be some way to strip them out and fill the grooves with Milliput or the like.

I think you'd be happier with a dulcimer, Jack. no frets, and fuck knows if anyone tunes them.

cost you more than three quid though.

Buzzing strings. Not every time I play it though, and not always the same string(s), which is a puzzle. A friend tightened up the truss rod, which helped a bit, but it's still temperamental. (Acoustic Heartwood guitar)

Tuning a 12 string or worse still, changing the strings.
Thankfully, I don't have to do either very often.

With an oud or cumbus, I find the double unison courses make it easier to tune - only one string of a pair will drift, most of the time. Maybe octave tuning makes it harder.

I hate guitars with truss rod covers. Truss rod covers are ugly.

I hate guitars without truss rod covers. They're a royal pain to adjust.

No hate, just a modest degree of disappointment.

The neck on my baritone is a little wide, something I didn't care about 20 years ago but now I notice. The top on my Weissenborn copy is so light it's virtually impossible to tune it up to open G without distorting the top with a tilting bridge. Open F suffices until it gets a bridge doctor.

I think otherwise I'm happy with my guitars, especially the "cold dead hands" guitars, the ones from which only death will make me part.

""cold dead hands""

on that sad note...

I popped in the local cash converters today...

New 2nd hand items on the wall, were a banjo, mandolin, and a lap slide guitar...

That's ominous...

Especially, as I'm turning 60 and I'm more aware than ever of musicians over a certain age popping off suddenly..

Speaking of Weissenborns, most of them have very narrow headstocks. For this reason, it's conventional to wind the 1st and 6th strings "the wrong way" to prevent headstock congestion. I'm used to it, but if someone unfamiliar with Weissenborns wants to try my instrument out, I have to remember to tell them lest it be handed back with a broken 1st string.

The worst thing about guitars is that even when you’ve bought the one you always wanted, there is always another better one you then want. This affliction is even worse with banjos and mandolins, because they are relatively more expensive to acquire (ignoring vintage D45s and the like).

my problem is that i love the cheaper ones - so generally i can always afford another one and they have no resale value.

Fair enough, but can you afford the space for them all? I have to keep moving to a larger house (but the family keep following me).

Well, I'm always disappointed that acoustic guitars aren't at least 50% louder.
