BS: What would you do with anti gravity?

Subject: BS: What would you do with anti gravity?
From: Donuel

Do we need anti gravity and what would we do
with it? Since some things are intrinsically linked we might have to deal with time reversals as well, as Mr. Red warns. That would open a can of worms or even unlock Pandora's box.

All I know is that if it is released, China will want it. :^/

My main concern with anti-gravity is that its existence would allow gravity to be treated as a commodity. Some genius would figure out a way to charge us for gravity just like we're charged for electricity or water. Every month, you'd get a gravity bill and, if you didn't pay it, you'd float away.

Isaac Newton has a lot to answer for...

...but if gravity could be nullified from within and upon a device, we'd be mining the asteroids and repairing that Mars rover.... and...and..

But, since the current opinion is that gravity is not a 'thing' or 'force', but a manifestation of the effect of mass on space, I suppose it's all just sci-fi...

We fall at 32 ft per sec per sec on Earth, on Jupiter cloud tops we fall at over 300 ft per sec...The speed of gravity moves at the speed of light/causality everywhere.

Anti gravity is generated by a negative pressure in bubble regions of empty space to preserve the proportionality of energy to space and like gravity accelerates not the attraction of mass but the expansion of space.

Therefore Anti gravity does not cancel or annihilate gravity.
Anti gravity that would cancel gravity would require a force that would shield mass from propagating the force of its energy and mass which is either impossible or unknown.

This is weighty stuff but if I get it so can Steve.

I am at this very minute watching Brian Cox in his programme 'Wonders of the Universe', the episode about Gravity. He's just been describing the Crab Nebula, which has released a stupendous amount of gravitational force. It could attract in and compress the entire population of the Earth into an egg-sized lump weighing trillions of tons. If it dropped on the Earth's surface it would (in his words) 'cut through it like a knife through butter'.
I do so like Brian, he's down-to Earth (sorry!) and yet extremely knowledgeable - the perfect teacher. No wonder he's a University Professor!

Ah, thank you Steve. I see from Google she's known as the 'Barnsley Nightingale', from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Brian was explaining Black Holes which sound terrifying. They have such enormous gravity that they are sucking in matter and compressing it with untold forces. I think he said also that this alters Time but I may have misunderstood. (I have no background in Science)

What if the entire Universe were eventually sucked in to become a tiny nugget of matter with an infinite Mass? Then it might all explode and started all over again with a Big Bang? Maybe this cycle has been going on for aeons, perhaps indefinitely?
Scary!

Donuel, in answer to your 7th point, many believe, including myself, that mankind has evolved to survive through cooperation, in spite of capitalist ideology doing its level best to show otherwise. According to Ed Mayo, even the expression dog-eat-dog is a misnoma in that in the wild dogs/wolves in behave cooperatively for the good of the pack.

Senoufou, I am wondering in terms of supernovae what the extent of the heliosphere of the resulting neutron star is, and how what percentage of the exploding matter actually escapes the stars' gravitational influence into inter-stellar space, and of what is left, how much is eventually is swallowed up by the star, and how much eventually accretes to become stable orbiting planetary bodies (or would the extreme energy pulses prevent that from happening?)

06 Feb 19 - 02:03 PM (#3975164)
Subject: RE: BS: What would you do with anti gravity?
From: Senoufou

That's interesting SPB. Brian Cox showed that the Crab Nebula had seven stars caught in small, frantic orbits around the entrance to the black hole. They weren't sucked in exactly, but couldn't escape. He described them as resembling 'bees around a honey pot'. So evidently, some of the matter doesn't move away and form new planets.

Also he said that huge eruptions of radiation can be observed shooting out of the hole at intervals.

I find the whole idea quite frightening, although I can't explain why.
I suppose one feels very small and insignificant in comparison to the Universe!

Subject: RE: BS: What would you do with anti gravity?
From: Donuel

SPB I think you are referring to wonder point #6. "Sometimes Iwonderwhy I behave against my self interest".
Why people will heroically throw caution to the wind for a stranger is a common occurrence.   In the few times, (far fewer than a nurse) that I have been a first responder I have noticed the cooperation of other witnesses to be zero to none, granted one such situation was on a NYC subway car.

Ones morality, empathy and group cooperation are ideals. History is violent.

I have seen 100 people watch a child get skull fracturing blows from an assailant while only one person intervened. Most people prefer not to get involved.

Civilized cooperation by humans in my opinion out paces wild dogs by a long shot.

I bet there is a similarity of black hole cores and neutron star cores compared to what is blown away in a super nova.

Subject: RE: BS: What would you do with anti gravity?
From: Jos

Donuel, sometimes bystanders do cooperate to help a stranger, such as when someone is pulled from a burning car, or when dozens of people all work together to lift a car or even a bus to free someone trapped underneath. Maybe the difference is that they don't expect the car or bus to suddenly turn on them, as might be the case when one person is being attacked by another.

Subject: RE: BS: What would you do with anti gravity?
From: Senoufou

We've noticed this sometimes Donuel.

My husband can't bear to see an elderly, frail person struggling with a full trolley in a supermarket car park. People ignore them, but he will always go to them and offer his help.

At first they're usually a bit wary, but he's so gentle and kind they let him load their stuff into the boot of their car, then he gives them a pound and takes the trolley back himself to get the coin back.

We would always go to someone who had fallen or is looking unwell.
I can understand why people are reluctant to put themselves in danger, for instance in a mugging or attack, but helping the weak, ill or frail is perfectly normal in our view.

06 Feb 19 - 05:11 PM (#3975187)
Subject: RE: BS: What would you do with anti gravity?
From: Donuel

Going from examples of wild dogs being more constructively cooperative than people to helping with groceries is quite a wide ranging conversation. Language is a valuable tool for we humans to avoid conflict but conflict happens anyway. I know that my life has been in jeopardy by attempted first degree murder a number of times BUT the 10,000 times I have been helped is the picture of reality I prefer to cherish. Absolute power is as dangerous as absolute trust.
I assume these truths to be self evident.

I bet a number of people here realize they are honestly lucky to be alive despite the malevolent or insane hand of man.

You know the difference between an unsafe traffic maneuver and a deliberate act of violence. If you are unsure, it was not deliberate.

I guess I'm just lucky. I fall down occasionally, this being Canada where we have ice for at least three months of the year, and usually I have to practically beat people off as they insist on dragging me to my feet before I am fully recombobulated.

The only people I remember who did not immediately rush up to grab me were two obviously terrified teenaged girls who found me sprawled in the snow in front of my own front door, having slipped off the stoop, landed on my arse, and displaced a lumbar disc. I managed to get to my feet but could not get back up on the stoop to go back inside to call an ambulance. One of the girls allowed me to coax her close enough to put my hand on her shoulder, so I could lift my foot and step up. The entire exchange felt like luring a deer with a salt lick.

French people, especially Parisians, are notoriously rude and dismissive of tourists, but when I tripped over a curbstone in front of Samaritain one day during the Christmas shopping rush, three women scooped me up off the pavement, brushed me thoroughly and checked me for broken bones. They then marched me to a nearby cafe and sat me down with a coffee and a piece of cake. Then they patted me on the shoulder and left. Yes, the French have style.

well strangers do cooperate.
Only today I was waiting for the penultimate bus in the middle of nowhere and a car pulled up and the lady told me there was a blockage and the bus would not get through. She gave me a lift to the next village and she was going in a loop to get to the village the bus would have come from. Sadly after she dropped me off I realised I had seen a "Road Blocked" sign on her most likely route also! But Thanx Janet.

I had noticed walking on that side of the road there were next to no cars suddenly, and a lot the other way. Never connected.

Am I correct in thinking that a spaceship that had lost power would just keep travelling on and on through space for eternity in the original direction it was headed? Until perhaps a large star or planet's gravity drew it into orbit?

I have this image in my head of a human face peering out while the ship gently turned over and over as it continued on and on forever.
