Jacqueline Steiner, who died of pneumonia, aged 94, on 25 Jan. 2019; is best known as being co-author of the song Charlie on the MTA (a version of The Man That Never Returned. Her obituary in The New York Times, published 5 Feb., tells us a lot about the origins of that song as well as about Ms Steiner.

Also recorded, as Jacqueline Sharpe, the LP "No More War".

A recent CD of hers updated the "MTA" lyrics.

interesting interview:
Jackie Steiner interview

Condolences to the family and friends.

Jacqueline (Jackie) Berman was active in People's Songs Boston along with Bess Lomax Hawes with whom she co-wrote CHARLIE ON THE MTA as
a campaign song for Boston mayoral candidate in 1949, slightly revised
it became a huge hit for the KINGSTON TRIO a decade late.

As Jackie Berman she performed in many People's Songs Hootenanny's and
one track is preserved on Folkways FN 2511 Hootenanny Tonight.

As Jacqueline Sharpe her NO MORE WAR album (1966) circulated among many in the anti-war (Viet Nam) movement.

I have not heard her 1991 album "Far Afield: Songs of Three Continents" - would be interested in obtaining a copy if any
one knows where to get it. Perhaps someone would post or PM a
track list. Thanks!

Thomas.

Bess Lomax Hawes tells how she and Jackie Steiner wrote Charlie and the MTA, something of its history and how much they enjoyed the royalty checks in chapter six of her autobiography Sing It Pretty
