What song is this from? I think about shipbuilding.

The line certainly makes an appearance in Archie Fisher's song "Fairfield Crane".

It's from 'The Fairfield Crane'.

Some dispute about authorship and it's claimed for both Archie Fisher and Norman Buchan. The story I heard was that Norman and Archie were in a small group to put together a radio programme about shipbuilding on the Clyde and at the last minute there was a need for something to fill a space... The tune is the one that the fiddler Bobby Campbell had previously used for 'Queen Eleanor's Confession' on an LP by The Exiles.

This will make sense to anyone who knew the Glasgow folk scene in the 60s -- Norman was an inspiration to many (setting up Rutherglen Academy Ballads Club in 1957, running a folk club for years in the Corner House, putting on big concerts with the likes of The Weavers, Pete Seeger, Cisco Houston etc. and running an open house where people could come to listen to his record collection -- Ray and Archie Fisher were regulars, as was Norman's brother-in-law Enoch Kent (who recorded with The Reivers and then The Exiles).

I always thought the song was called The Shipyard Apprentice.

The lyrics as taken from a Malinky album here -

The song is here on Mudcat in the DT as Fairfield Crane. Lyrics were also posted in the threads Lyr Req: Shipyard Apprentice (Archie Fisher) and Origins: The Fairfield Crane/Shipyard Apprentice.

And another person who sings it is Arthur Johnstone ( formerly of The Laggan, and now, The Stars Band.) He always tells his audiences that Crane should be pronounced CRAN (almost crahn), as that's how the Clyde sipbuilders said it.
