2019 Obit: Cathy Rollo, Gloucestershire/Worcs

Brave soul she ebbed away over the last month, and passed away at 9:20 GMT today.

She was a member of various ceilidh bands in the Cheltenham/Malvern areas. More recently "Gordon the Hedgehog" and "Malthouse Passage". Mostly her instruments were contra-bassoon and clarinet, though pretty versatile on more instruments.

Often seen in the Cheltenham area at sessions and festivals, and Sidmouth which she managed to attend last year despite chemo.

We did not see as much of her at ceilidhs partly due to the illness but mostly because she was so obliging her colleagues pressured her into working Saturdays as a carer. Indeed she took annual leave to have the operation! (Which makes me angry! Carers for colleagues???)

Finally retirement was the only option, and the Hospice she ended at were amazed at the number of different visitors. Too right, we didn't get to see her when she could dance (And boy she could dance) so we made up for lost time. Some of her friends played music to her and did little concerts for the other patients.

Rest now.

Funeral is Monday April 8th, 1.30, at Cheltenham Crematorium.

We intend playing some of her tunes at the next Stroud Ceilidhs before &/or during the break. On the 6th in Lister Hall/Chantry Centre, Dursley. Token Women.

Cathy with a C not Kathy with a K! She was a remarkable musician - I think it was John Kirkpatrick who referred to her as 'the woman who's learnt the tune before you finish playing it!'

The Crematorium was extreme standing room only.
As was the pub afterwards. And we played the usual tunes and plus the known tunes of hers. We think there may be more amongst her effects - something we hope the family will share.

In the meantime I have set up a web page with JPGs of her and the dots to 4 tunes. In the fullness of time I will add music such as it can be identified. The wake was still going at 6pm.

Cathy Rollo, music

Her large instrument was a bass clarinet, not a contra basson, though there was one at the wake.
