I Need Help Identifying a Song

Hello!

Last weekend, a Singer/Songwriter was playing songs after a show he had just performed. He played a very cute love song and noted that it was a Greg Brown tune. Well, i've looked through all of Greg's songs and can't find anything.

Due to the circumstances in which I heard the song, I wasn't able to record any lyrics. So, what I remember is the story that was told before he played it was that it's a song about a boy trying to tell a girl how much he cares for her, but he keeps tripping over his words, so the song is mostly nonsensical.

The verses start off with "Bright moon, trey diddly..." and that's all i've got. I blame whiskey.

I appreciate the help in finding this song if you've got any leads!

Well, the first Greg Brown moon song that comes to mind is Rooty Toot Toot for the Moon.
It's a great song, but probably not your song.

Great tune! But nope, that's not the one. Side note, he's got a lot of songs that talk about the moon.

Michele Purkaple
I remember the song was sung by a lady banjo player on Rounder Records. It had lengthy verses that began with, "I was brought up in Cornwall, all in a high degree. My parents, they adored me, had no child only me. I ripped, I roved, I rambled where e're my fancies led, 'til I become apprenticed, and then my joys they fled."

That's Why I Love You Like I Do by Roger Miller?

This is a story bout a boy that loved a girl loved her very much
In fact he loved her so much he couldn't seem to find exact words
To tell her exactly how much he did love her
Oh he tried several times but so anytime he tried
The words always came out backwards came out some like this
Bright moon tray fiddley run by through around and up to
That's why I love you so much that why I love you like I do

According to this discography, Roger Miller's song "That's Why I Love You Like I Do" appeared on his album "Roger and Out" (1964). It was Miller's first album. The album was later retitled "Dang Me" to take advantage of his hit song of that name, which was on the album.

You can hear "That's Why I Love You Like I Do" on YouTube. The nonsense words will make it difficult to transcribe, but I might tackle it tomorrow.
