I heard this morning that today marks the 150th anniversary of the publication by Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev of the Periodic Table for the first time. Mendeleev not only made the important connections of various elements with commonalities, but identified that gaps in the Table existed which presumably would be filled with the discovery of more elements, which they were.

This was a stupendous and creative leap forward for science and he would undoubtedly have received a Nobel Prize for it had it existed at the time.

One would think this deserves a song or so. And, of course, it has

I just saw part of what appeared to be a great history of chemistry on PBS, with the part I saw being how Mendeleev came up with it. They had a lot of his drafts, it was fascinating.

The debate over how to present the periodic table rages to this day. The neat and regular idea of how similar elements have similar properties is not as orthogonal as you would believe. Wiki - Periodic Table shows Hydrogen sitting on top of the Alkali metals.

There are numerous other ways to present the table. One has a sort of circular presentation with layers and arms.

Do you know anyone who has actually mastered the Elements Song?
