12 Apr 19 - 01:53 AM (#3986984) Subject: RE: Nuclear thanksgiving hymn suggestions From: GUEST,Phil d'Conch Recent slightly off-topic Reddit exchange: Fun V-weapon fact - it cost the Nazis more to develop the V1 and V2 rockets than it cost the Americans to run the Manhatten project to produce nuclear weapons. No need for precision guidance with nukes. Nukes have always been a “To whom it may concern” kind of weapon. Fat Man specifically was an "As per my last email" weapon. 13 Apr 19 - 03:01 AM (#3987162) Subject: RE: Nuclear thanksgiving hymn suggestions From: BobL The service is, I understand, to commemorate 50 years of peace and the Royal Navy's role in helping to maintain it. The presence of nuclear weapons may also have had something to do with it. However, to describe the service as a "thanksgiving for the bomb" is the sort of journalistic distortion we would expect from the likes of [insert newspaper of your choice here]. But to answer the OP, Chesterton's hymn "O God of earth and altar" would seem to be still as appropriate as ever. |
