Song Challenge: Manny Singh

I doubt Jim Maclean needs to be told who Manny Singh is, or why he deserves a song right now.

In fact he's probably started writing one already. Post it soon?

C'mon, somebody do one in time for this?

We're All Manny Singh

My initial response was to indicate that outside Scotland many would not know who Manny Singh was. On reflection that may well apply to many inside Scotland, since the (impartial) BBC gave practically no coverage to a march in Glasgow on Saturday supporting the cause of Scottish independence, despite the fact that tens of thousands participated. Manny was a key figure in organising this march under the auspices of an organisation called All Under One Banner.

The actual figure of participants is disputed, but was certainly well in excess of 50,000 and resulted in the closure of many of the busiest streets in the centre of Scotland's largest city: use your own judgement as to whether this was newsworthy.

I attended with my wife, son, daughter and grandchildren and bought a CD at a stall on Glasgow Green: an imperfect copy of the Folkways "Ding Dong Dollar" from the 1960s featuring many songs from the aforementioned Jim, which revived happy memories of the heyday of the burgeoning CND movement. Go for it, Jim.

Almost all estimates of numbers in the march are far above that - 100,000 to 150,000. Manny and All Under One Banner mobilized two or three times as many people as welcomed John Maclean back to Glasgow. This is a big deal.

Couldn't make it this year (too ill) but I was at the head of the march for the whole route last year, just behind Manny. His unflappable mix of traffic-coppery and ballet directing was truly impressive. The marchers (including me) had complete confidence in him, for good reason. I haven't heard a single negative.

A quick starter, tune based roughly on We're off to the Camp in the Country.

Lets all sing for Manny,
Let's show them what we mean,
Stuff their silly rules an laws,
We're marching tae the Green.
He blew the starting whistle,
The Cooncil blew aff steam,
But Manny shouted "Here we go!
We're marching tae the Green"!

Those bureaucratic bastards,
Wi' faces never seen,
Let's tell them where tae push their pens,
We're marching tae the Green.
Remember on the fourth of May
Two thousand and nineteen,
Defiant Manny led us on
The march tae Glesga green.

They'll mebbe try tae jail him
Like John MacLean yestreen,
Oor Manny Singh the hero
O' the march tae Glesca Green.
But a hundred thousand marchers,
A sight ye've never seen.
Will shout the name o' Manny
On the March tae Glesca Green.

So let's all sing for Manny,
Let's show them what we mean,
Stuff their silly rules an laws,
We're marching tae the Green.
He blew the starting whistle,
The Cooncil blew aff steam,
But Manny shouted "Here we go!
We're marching tae the Green"!

I've passed that on to AUOB, End the Union and the We Are All Manny Singh page - if you read any related media and haven't seen it yet, you know what to do.

Jim is a treasure.

I didn't remember "Camp in the Country" - it's certainly an appropriate choice. You can hear enough to get the tune here:

Bravo, Jim.

My one and only appearance singing on TV was singing one of Jim McLean's songs. I was very young and had never heard of the Performing Rights Society.

Jack, if you skip over the "Hooray, hooray"s the words fit.

Weerover, thanks for singing the song and you don't need to know about the PRS. If you sang on TV they pick up the royalty.

One of the best features of the day was the counter-independence demo at George Square: perhaps a couple of dozen waving their wee Union Flags and shouting (feebly), "Traitors". They were probably hoping to provoke a reaction from the march, the only one they got was the passing marchers looking over at them and grinning at how pathetic their turnout was.
