So, she has thrown the towel in.

What happens next?

I should say the only prospective leader declared or discussed so far who shows any signs of thoughtfulness and awareness to me is Rory Stewart. So naturally he doesn't stand much of a chance.

Hopefully Johnson and Gove will stab each other in the backs. Not sure who is the best of the rest of the bad bunch.

Theresa May is gone - and Britain is now at the mercy of a small band of barmy Tory members

When did the country in general loose it's marbles?

Fron the BBC website:

[Daniel Kawczynski] added that despite Mr Johnson's sometimes blustering image, he is "now becoming a statesman... he's maturing".

Boris Johnson is 54. A little late to be maturing, don't you think?

Thw tories would be best served by keeping a weather eye on the Brexit party. I suspect we are entering General Election territory.

Regarding any possible GE, and repeating what I posted about the EU elections - what I find ludicrous is that, pre-Referendum, simple-minded people believed everything Farage told them, and voted for what he stood for - when, in fact, he hadn’t a clue how to bring Brexit about, no plan whatsoever. So he and his cronies did their ‘Run For The Hills’ routine and left the rest of us with Mayhem.

Now here he is again, still no clue, no plan, nothing - and the bumpkins are queueing up to vote his way again!

What was it Einstein said about insanity?

I feel bad for her. She voted Remain and got stuck with this mess when her predecessor quit, and I think she struggled valiantly. Yes, she failed, but not through lack of effort. None of the news coverage I've seen remembers that.

Ironic that the US President Donald Trump arrives in the UK just in time to wave her goodbye. Her dodgy Russian dossier has arrived back in Spades. I am sure the President will be laughing his head off at her.
Paybacks a bitch!

No Mrrzy, she didn’t ‘get stuck with it’, she put herself forward for it - clearly visualising herself as some kind of Thatcher #2. Nobody is forced to become PM, they volunteer to be part of an election process. She volunteered, she was elected, and she’s been found very badly lacking.

Don’t waste your sympathy.

If he did the prevarication would cease toute suite! However he would need to be a naturalised citizen of the UK and also an MP. These requirements would preclude him from participating.

Since Boris can be relied on to act in his self interest I suspect we would end up with some kind of deal. Raab, for example, is enough of a zealot I don't think he would really seek one.

I wouldn't worry too much about Boris getting the job. Whatever he does with brexit, allowing of course for the inconvenient fact that he has the House of Commons to deal with, he'll be toast as he will not be able to heal divisions either in his party or in the country. To add to that, he'll get no concessions from the EU. It's amusing to see so many minor Tories jostling for the top job, all of them clearly too thick to see that it would be the poison chalice of all poison chalices.

And again, cheers to our hard-working mods. Our thread can keep going, loveless though it must seem to our US friends.

Unfortunately it will probably do irreparable damage to Britain as well - a racist PM at a time when racism has been used as the reason or leaving Europe - doesn't really bear thinking about
That really would set Powell's "Rivers of Blood" flowing down the streets of Britain

From Gavin Barwell - "As the PM's Chief of Staff for the last two years, I have seen at first hand her commitment to public service and her incredible resilience as she has confronted the biggest challenge any British Government has faced since the Second World War. It has been an honour to serve her."

The only labour MP who may have the same commitment as PM is Hilary Benn.

...And the ballot to choose our next prime minister will be restricted to just over 100,000 people who are mostly elderly, nearly all white, immune from the deleterious effects of brexit and much wealthier than the national average. I should like to know from those among us who accused the six million who signed to oppose brexit and the doubtless millions more who think the same way of being "undemocratic" think that the next PM will have "a democratic mandate." I know what I think...

I think it is that British support for the underdog coming through, Steve. Pity she was not really the underdog though.

I'm put in mind of a fine song by Stanley Accrington from back in the late 80's

It's Eddie the Eagle, he's out on the slope
It's Eddie the Eagle, he looks like a dope
He may not fly far and he may not fly fast
But we're proud that he's British and he always comes last

Maybe it could be re-written?

It's May the prime minister, she's pushing a bill
It's May the prime minister, it makes us all ill
She may not get out and she may not remain
But we're proud to be British and going down the drain

Not bad for 5 minutes :-)

It will be interesting to see how May's replacement attempts to sort out this dog's breakfast
It's already been suggested that Johnson will backtrack on Brexit - he's not exactly renowned for his principles

I don't agree. She made the wrong turn at almost point in office. She failed to consult, tried to sidestep parliamentary democracy in her arrogance and oversaw worsening conditions in schools and in a crumbling health service, did nothing to soften the harsh benefits system, failed to address the mental health issue...and let's not mention the hostile environment, and Windrush...

She deserves no sympathy. Good riddance.

Sorry Steve - I don't think anything about Brexit or Europe is straightforward - love to share a pint with you over it.
May could have caved into the neanderthals and just accepted crashing out, which would have been as big a disaster for us over here you could imagine
At least she attempted to get some sort of a compromise
Nobody could have manipulated a totally split Parliament
She is as big as shit as any of the Tories (if she hadn't been, she'd have fought for a second referendum), but given that, she fought what was little more than a single handed battle, she at least didn't take the easy way out to keep her job
As I said - complicated (as is supporting an organisation of European Capitalist states)
If you'd have told me at the time the E.U. were attempting to manipulate the Greek Political system, that's I'd be supporting them I'd have probably poured my pint over your head
Complicated is hardly the word for this ***** mess

If you are anti brexit and support the BBC licence you are a traitor and deserve to be rounded up and dealt with...

ok.. Thursday I had a pint in the local cider pub for the first time in months,
and sat there listening before I went on to meet the mrs to go voting.....

Be warned, the brexiteer pub pissheads now know trendy buzzwords like "narrative"...

"...the country I love, boo bloody hoo..."

Yeah, the country that made me rich, the country that can go to hell on a handcart as long as me and my Tory lackeys have their wealth protected. I love this country but not enough to police the streets to protect young people from knife crime and county lines, not enough to protect the most vulnerable from intolerable and fascistic benefits rules, not enough to stop our schools (state ones, of course, not private: heaven forfend!) from crumbling away, not enough to provide the most basic prompt healthcare for the poorest, not enough to protect vulnerable workers from sharks who provide zero-hours contracts and exploitative jobs without security, not enough to get to grips with a burgeoning mental ill-health crisis, not enough to be bothered to address the questions of homelessness and reliance on food banks. Not enough to make immigrants and refugees feel welcome in the fifth richest economy in the world. Not enough to accept, here in my Westminster bubble, that brexit would pitch this country into hell. Oh yes, It's the country I love. Boo hoo.
