Hi,

Well it's after midnight and we're still here..... and my computer still seems to be working.

I've seen the fireworks with my family, and the first baby of the century is already born at 00.01 in New Zealand.... they're calling him Adam.

I wish all of my friends at Mudcat a healthy, peaceful and Happy New Year....

love to you all

It is truely a great show from Oz. However, One thing keeps bugging me..yes, spaw, I know you couldnt care less, I always thought the news media were in the business of imparting information. True information that is, OK would someone please tell Soledad O'Brion that IT IS NOT THE FREEKIN" millennium!! That is a year away.

The fireworks in Sydney Harbor were wonderful!! I loved the story about the fella who used to write 'Eternity' all over town. Glad to hear from you, alison, and a happy, happy new year to you and the family!! Do you think anyone will write a song about how 'The Lights Stayed On In Sydney'??

Happy New Year to all our friends in The Land Down Under! Our local oldies station sent the morning DJ to Sydney to broadcast the countdown live from Luna Park under the bridge in Sydney Harbour. We listened to it while taking our daughter to work. It was a treat. They will also be broadcasting from Perth, Madrid, London, and here in Washington, DC. Just think, 5 midnights in one day! Wow!

Cheers!

Happy 2000 (that begs the question nicely) to all my friends in OZ and to all souls on Mudcat. I'm hoping selfishly that the reassurance we get as each time zone makes the transition without problems may diminish the panic-quotient. I know that the Millennium itself is in 2001, and it probably has already been 2004 years since Jesus was born, and were I a Creationist it would have been 6003 years since the world was created (I actually have an old Bible that gives Ussher's dates in the margin; he dates Creation as 9 AM October 21, 4004 BC) , but there is something wonderful about seeing all those zeroes as the world's odometer rolls over. I wish you all a wonderful 2000 and many more years

Happy First Year of the Two Thousands to all of our Ozzie Mudders! Thanks for warning us in advance of any quirks, but Alison, the only date I saw on your link was Dec. 31, 1999?!

I was up at 430a, but too lazy to wander downstairs to the TV, so missed the broadcasts. We will have it on most of the day, now, though, so I llok forward to seeing recaps of the beauty you all are talking about.

Here's to all you Mudders!

still about eight hours to go- but watched the sydney harbour celebrations on tv utterly fantastic, its just started to get dark here in yorkshire and in the dim distant I can see some early fireworks being let off .weather is warmish and not raining thank goodness as there are a few street parties due to start anytime now. I feel a bit deflated by it all- i,m usually too much of an old cynic to pay any attention to events like this, but the universality of it is awesome. We may not all have seen Liveaid, we may not all have seen charles and di get married, but every single one off us will pass into another century. Have a great New Year everyone.

Hi all,

It's 10.21 am New Year's Day here in east coast Oz. We went to a gentle, neighbourly street party where most of our friends live, and saw the New Year/Millenium in with some very homely but pretty fireworks. We didn't watch the fireworks etc in Sydney on tv or watch any of the other events around the world, and now I wish I had taped it.

Oh well.

I agree about the awesome universality of it (well for Christians and members of predominantly Christian countries who live by this calendar, anyway. Still, it is a significant proportion of the world's population)

I'm not even going to try to list off specifc Mudcatters' names because I'll forget some of you and you'll think I don't love you, so happy, happy, happy everything to every one of you.

And I share musicman's wish to meet as many of you in real life as I can in the nearest possible future.

with love Helen

Well Alison, following the ICQ chat, I have just had a look and it does say 3900. Unless it is a joke, it is the weirdest Y2K bug that I have heard of and can only guess that somebodys programming logic has gone comletelty astray e.g. mabe 00 = 2000 and 99 = 1900 and some one along the line has translated it to equate to 00 = 2000 + 1900 to yeild the 3900 that they have managed.

G'day,
I have the same ISP as Alison. It obviously has a Y3.9K bug. There'll be other programs with this bug (if the year doesn't start with '19' add 1900).

We did a gig way out in the bush last night. They had a small set of fireworks at 9pm with another scheduled for midnight. Near the end of the 9pm set one of the rockets fell over just as it went off. It shot the old Land Cruiser containing the midnight fireworks. I'd miss the Sydney spectacular any time for this sort of entertainment. Morning revealed lots of twisted metal & blistered paintwork. The only things unscathed were the bull bar which had been hand crafted by the owner, the (illegal) Nebraska number plate & both rear tyres.

Cheers,
Alan

Hi Katters

Just back from TV-free Woodford (except for the TV cameras). We missed all the TV coverage, but what a party anyway!

On 1st January the great Fire Event had world-wide coverage, but sitting on the hill with 60,000 other folkies was something very special. 1500 performers, massed choir, elaborate lantern parades, and the torching of all the structures(including a 20 metre high "temple") with lots of fireworks was something special, with the only other light coming from candles. All the structures, made of timber and paper, and representing many cultures, carried messages of peace and environmental awareness. Thousands of messages of peace and love were contained in them.

As for Woodford - one word - MUD! It pissed down on the 26th and 27th, turning the whole camping ground into a sea of mud and 5000 bogged cars. Everyone shrugged their shoulders and went out and enjoyed themselves anyway.

As for the music - 20 stages, so much music you couldn't possible experience it all. Some of the highlights for me were Andy Irvine, Scottish guitarist Tony McManus, the Fagans and especially James Fagan/Nancy Kerr, the New Age Sensitive Cowpersons; Never the Twain were also good. Kristina Olsen appeared with Cellist Peter Grayling, with occasional appearances of supporting musicians, such as amazing singer/guitarist Jeff Lang.

Other good performances came from Sirocco, Margret Roadknight, Kavisha Mazzella, Bernard Bolan, the Backsliders, Bushwackers, Bernard Carney, Andrew Clermont, Dya Singh, and many others that I did not get to see, but heard good reports about, such as Iota, Tiddas and Seamus Begley/Jim Murray.

Street theatre, heaps of kids' shows (including a circus), endless jam sessions; after a while your mind gets overloaded and you think about what you are going to eat instead of finding the next session.

The comedians were excellent, but one summed up the new year thus "What is so special about the new millenium? We are all going to die in it!"

Regards and happy new year
Chris

I watched quite a lot, but I enjoyed reading this thread more. So Oz has the greatest fireworks ever, The Opera House, gatherings of thousands of folkies, one great bunch of my favorite kind of people AKA Mudcatters and ..........................THE FAIR ONE. Why do I get the sense that if I ever went to this fantastic place I would never return. Happy New Year to all of our friends in Australia.

All the best,

G'day all,

I have just got back from avoiding all the hype by going bush (~200 kilmetres south of Sydney, at a friend's place in Nerriga). I'll see if anyone, post-Olympics has the energy to celebrate the real end of the 2nd millennium.

Áine: One of our newspapers suggested that Eternity is the authorities estimate of how long it took to get home after the party!

Regards for the rest of this millennium ... and beyond.
